So a few months back, I finally played Pokemon TCG on the gameboy after all this time. I was always intrigued by it, but maybe felt it too plain and complicated from the screens I saw. I only collected cards back in the day, but never actually played the TCG. Well I finally played it and wow, very surprised. The music and the gameplay was pretty fun, and definitely deserved the 9/10 I kept seeing it get all these years. Only negatives I see is the core TCG game play itself is pretty coin flip heavy. Also I found out myself you can cheap out the game by spamming Dragonair Hyper Beam. Otherwise those stand stepping npcs are hype.

Now I move on to Colosseum. Now I admit I was never into any pokemon sidegames just because it has pokemon plastered on it. It actually has to pull me in ( like Snap, Pinball, or Stadium). And I always found Colosseum pretty lacking in graphics and gameplay from what I saw, especially when you consider it was right next to other Gamecube greats. But now its time I find out if my assumptions are true, and maybe I'll move on to try other pokemon games (like Mystery Dungeon, I wonder what thats all about...)

To close, I also played Battle Revolution recently for the first time. Pretty bare, and lacking in the style of the Stadium games. So while the actual gameplay is pure good pokemon, it feels like it needs to be paired with Platinum to be somewhat decent. 6.5/10

so some random ramblings...

after 3 hours of play, some pros, cons, and observations:

Pros:

  • The music. Very surprising. The higher quality Ruby/Saphhire music during quick battles is excellent, aswell as the story mode battle music. The town songs are also great, most specifically Phenac City, which kinda reminded me of Zelda at the start.
  • The pokemon animations. About as detailed or probably even more so than Battle Revolutions. Same goes for the pokemon attacks.
  • Simple to understand so far. Its not mechanic heavy, and barely any travel heavy fetch quests. The simple layout of the cities so far is actually to my liking.

Cons:

  • The graphics. I'm playing this on a good ol CRT tv with component cables. Back when this game was advertised and released, it was my first observation. It's like they took Sonic Adventures NPCS and environments and gave em slightly more polygons. The animations are very plain too, with Wes running around like he needs to take a dump.
  • Same easy gameplay, but probably even more easy. No wild pokemon, so I'm just catching what I'm given, if I want to. No need to strategize so far, I'm just spamming A to win, and to talk to NPCS.
  • Long animations and attacks. While impressive, damnit I wish certain things were sped up.
  • The "frozen heart" mechanic. I've taken Bayleef to more than 7 trainer battles so far and its still not "defrosted", it should have snapped out of it after 5 atleast. The plus side is the other "frozen" pokemon get shared defrosting.

Random observations:

  • The story is very simple to understand and passable, but I feel it would fit better as an anime 5 part sidestory or something, I'd watch that.
  • Wes is like proto-Alain. I've personally never liked his design, but it surprised me he never talks.
  • Ruis face...is somewhat strange. She reminds me of Espeon. There better be more to her later on.
  • Dawn and Serena confirmed, Rui wears Dawns boots and a random lady NPC wears Serenas hat
  • ...Is that a prostitute in the mayors upstairs bedroom? ayyylmao kids game.
  • Half this games dialogue so far is people complaining about Team Snagem and the thugs in Pyrite Town, or hitting on Wes or Rui and shipping Rui and him together. Rui gets jealous at one point and tells Wes to be a man and fight that chick, CHAD WES.

Gale of Darkness is far better than Colosseum, and is easily my favorite Pokemon game ever. Gale of Darkness helped my cement my favorite Pokemon ever, Lugia. I ran through Gale of Darkness so many times and it never gets old. I have Colosseum and the bonus disc, I don't believe it's a bad game, but Gale of Darkness just speaks to me so much more.

Can't wait until you play it.

I'm definately moving on to XD as soon as I finish Colosseum. Gonna make another assumption and say the story will be far shorter than the mainline games. Last mainline game I finished was White, and it took me about 60+ hours or so. I'll see to it.

If you mean Hyper or Reverse or whatever it's called mode, I don't think it wears off on its own. Use the "Call" mechanic.

If you mean the Frozen status... just use an Ice Heal.

Colosseum is amazing. The Hoenn Pokemon have so much personality thanks to their animations. Zigzagoon running between the first trainer's legs is amazing.

Sadly some of the Johto and all the Kanto Pokemon do look look they came straight from the n64 Stadium games with no visual upgrades.

Colosseum has the most difficult post game in the entire franchise IMO. Let us know what you think about the Level 100 Colosseum mode.

Oh, Colosseum gets harder.

Have you ever wondered what fighting a Slaking without Truant is like? You're going to find out.
