Clamperl is a fish egg that shields itself with a clamshell until it's ready to hatch.

Then why is it called clamperl?

Because it looks like a pearl

Exactly. It's the same reason we call Orcas "Killer Whales" even though they're actually dolphins.

What???

That reminds me, why aren't there any dolphin, porpoise or narwhal Pokémon yet...

Because it looks like one and produces actual pearls which are the ones Spoink carry on their heads.

That's headcanon, nothing is confirmed.

Or are you also going to tell me that Magikarp is a dragon egg or that Remoraid is actually an octopus turned inside out? :^)

Killer Whales are dolphins.

But many don’t want to accept that Kyogre is a dolphin because it doesn’t look like the Bottlenose Dolphin or a River Dolphin.

Like asking for a Sheep Pokémon when Mareep exists and people say “No, it doesn’t have the eyes of a sheep I want a real sheep Pokémon” and then we get Wooloo who is almost a carbon copy except it fits even more with a sheep.

It's not literally an egg, but the way it's head looks kinda resembles the egg of a fish. It also always looks like it's sleeping and tends to rock from one side to the other, when it's animated, which makes it resemble an infant in a crib.

It may be a creative take on a "fish baby".

I guess it's an egg and not a pearl? I dunno

I mean, most Pokemon are based on multiple things.

Magikarp based on an legend that if a carp manages to leap over a sacred gate, it'll be rewarded by becoming a dragon. Remoraid's evolution is purely due to their gun analogy and can be viewed as a gun upgrading into a cannon. They chose an octopus because it was probally the only sea creature they could think with a reputation for shooting stuff (with ink).
