For me mk was always about being a dark fantasy fighter with some real themes thrown in (special forces) but after playing mk11 I feel
like they’re straying away from it.

For me it’s going to have be a toss up between mk2 or mkx

mkx had a very dark art style just from the character designs (ermac, sub zero, scorpion just to name a few) mk11 is very bright and colorful while mk9 had a very cartoony look to it.

Of the new ones, 9. Free.

Old ones, 3 ultimate and 2 are just gems. Everything after that is weaker but 4 was alright.
Now playing: Overwatch, MK11, CTR:NF, DQ11

MK9 is what literally revived the series.

And I think that was the issue I had having played MK11 for a while now

Yes, Mortal Kombat always had a general dark atmosphere to it, but even back then, the characters had vibrant color palettes that stood out, especially in MK2. Was never a fan of the muted colors. MK2 also had a sense of humor, as does this one, moreso than MKX did at times.

Honestly, MK11 feels the most Mortal Kombat-esque in recent years, especially in the designs. The characters back then had a very comic-book esque design to them and here they are returning to their roots by using modern comic book design sensibilities for their characters.

MKX was too dark and drab. I like the brighter look they went with for this one.

Mortal Kombat II is the most MK game. It's still a tournament, unlike 3 where Kahn is straight invading via loophole, and all of the iconic characters are present unlike 1 which lacks Shao Kahn (for example). It's the height of MK popularity, too.
