I disagree with this, honestly. If you're struggling, leveling your team can certainly make things a bit easier, but it mostly comes down to the mechanics. I just got done with an Ultimate playthrough with a team of characters that started at ~30 and only had a couple of defeats in the very beginning throughout the whole thing.

If you want to do anything more than the main story the first time around, you absolutely have to grind.

And even for the main story the first time around, you might have to grind just to get your AI buddies to stop getting killed off constantly.

No. You can if you want but grind isn't really need to beat the game.
