Colossus disagrees. Power synergies between them have potential.

You're ignoring the context.

Mutants are considered a discriminated against group in comics. Someone threw a slur against her, and she punched him. A non-mutant black woman, Stevie, broke the fight up and chided Kitty for fighting the boy. She explained that the boy had used a slur. Stevie told her that's no excuse because they were just words. Kitty asked if it would be no big deal if the boy had called her an n-word lover.

It's a direct take on that fact that discrimination, bigotry and double standards exist within minority communities. For instance, despite black people being discriminated against on a daily basis in American life, primarily-black urban communities are among the least accepting places for gay youths.

Now, you can debate whether inserting the mutant allegory into real life situations is entirely appropriate, but that doesn't mean it has any less a point. Nor does it mean that Kitty using that word, in those circumstances, is a suggestion that she condones the use of that word, quite the opposite actually.

Still, it's in poor taste to use the word at all, especially when you make a comparison to a fictional concept.

Then your issue is with the writer, not the character. If you want to separate fiction and reality then do so, and instead of blaming someone who doesn't exist, blame the person who does.

And on that note, if using it at all regardless of context is an issue... Django Unchained. 12 Years a Slave. Any other number of movies.
