Cross Ange is a bad show

This is heresy.

Look, I enjoy trainwrecks too but that doesn't suddenly make them good.

Norma were just normal people in general that couldn't use "magic".

Considering that Norma are literal cannon fodder for fighting dragons, that pilot mecha with probably even lower safety standards than Armored Troopers, it's not that far off.

The irony is that, if you cut out or ignore the blatant fanservice (which is arguably a parody due to how in-your-face it is), the overall construction of the show and characters is actually fairly good due to leaving almost no major plot threads unanswered and (as b****y as they are) all the regular characters have rounded personalities due to being shown to having some kind of drive in life, no matter how petty. From this standpoint, the show is above the likes of Code Geass and Valvrave.

Okay let's put Valvrava in a box and light it on fire cause that's one of the lowest bars you can go for in the mecha genre.

First off, the fanservice is not what makes Ange bad as a show. It might put some people off with how well, much, it is at times but it's not why the show is bad. The show is bad because well, the characters are almost universally unlikable and the writing/plot is an absolute s***show.

First off, the fanservice is not what makes Ange bad as a show.

It's a commonly stated reason for why people don't like it and/or claim why it's a bad show, which was a good enough reason to mention it.

Except unlikeable characters are different from badly written characters. Every character is shown to have some core values (no matter how petty) that drive their decisions that can be used to explain their actions; AFAIK, objectively speaking, this is far from a badly written character (again, whether they're likeable as a result is a separate issue that relies heavily on tastes).

The only bit that was admittedly farfetched was Tusk and Momoka surviving; the former was described as "ninjutsu", which is something that was actually hinted at when Ange throws a shuriken Tusk gives when escaping the former's public execution, but everything else in the "plot," or maybe more accurately how events flow from one to another since there are no overarching arcs in the story, was hardly as bad as you're making out of it as there was no incidents that occurred due to people suddenly breaking character or sudden plot devices shown that were subsequently forgotten.

Except unlikable characters make the show less enjoyable, and less enjoyment makes the show worse. Subjectively, of course

I like more than enough of the characters in Cross Ange(Ange, Hilda, Sala, Chris(even with her childish reason for feeling betrayed,)) and the ones I don't tend to get karma'd for it(Julio, Salia, Jill, the mobs of Misurugi.)

Having some unlikable characters can be good, since they stir emotion in you when you see them succeed over the characters you do like, and then there's catharsis when you see them get their comeuppance. See: Iok Kujan from IBO.

As for the other subject, I wouldn't be looking for anything particularly complex between the Norma and Human Debris, just mutual understanding of each other, maybe Ange and Mika could bond a bit on how they both have no patience for rambling dumbasses on the battlefield and just get the job done.

Having some unlikable characters can be good,

This is true. The problem comes from the fact is that Cross Ange barely has any likable characters.

When you combine a poorly written story with a cast of mostly unlikable characters but you also have good music and some decent mechs/action scenes you get what we typically call a trainwreck. Something like Code Geass where no matter how ludicrous or out of nowhere the weekly plot twists are you can't seem to look away.

Evangelion and Full Metal Panic should be in T instead of V. Godmars need to be in either in X or T. Trider G7 need to be replaced with either Daitarn 3 or Baldios. Speaking about Baldios again it also need to be included in V because it take place mostly in space.
