After around a week and a half of gathering information, trading for tools from namely the users @XseriesFan , @slashinvictim, and @Coolkid724, and a LOT of broken tools, I finally have Durabilities for every single tool in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, as well as any quirks related to durability with each tool. I've elected to compose infographics that present this information in a more concise and clear-at-a-glance way.

A big thanks to everybody who replied in the original stickied thread; your input really helped me make sure all bases were covered when it came to documenting everything related to tool durability in this game.

I must also extend a thank-you to a less connected-to-GameFAQs source at Polygon, Julia Lee (@dahrae_) with a tip on Watering Cans here: https://bit.ly/2X5n2uB

Although the information was slightly incorrect upon my extensive testing, I wouldn't have been able to check that without her doing so first.

This guide will feature infographics for each tool, but there will also be a more verbose text write-up for everything within each infographic. This is to both go in more explanatory depth and to aid in people who want to use in-browser search tools to find relevant information for a specific tool quickly.

Watering Cans do not lose Durability when:
  • Watering already-watered plants

Watering Cans can break when:
  • Watering Flowers that haven't yet been watered
  • Watering the ground where no plants are growing

* Watering multiple flowers with a single usage of the Watering Can results in -1 durability, regardless of how many flowers are watered
** Thanks to an article referenced above by Polygon's Julia Lee (@dahrae_), I found out that fractions of durability are lost when watering the ground as opposed to what I used to think resulted in no durability loss. However, the article is incorrect with the amount of durability lost; 1/20 durability is lost, not 1/10.

=====
Three tips when using tools related to durability:
https://gamefaqs1.cbsistatic.com/user_image/1/9/9/AAYFkMAAAUEX.jpg
  1. When playing couch co-op multiplayer, the second player's tools cannot break since they cannot view the tool destruction event.
  2. Customization Kits replace the tool they customize, fully repairing their durability.
  3. Vaulting Poles, Ladders, and Wands have infinite durability.

Only in Animal Crossing will your net completely dismantle after catching a flower petal.

You don't UNDERSTAND, MAN. Those things are vicious! You're lucky to be alive trying to catch those with a net, less so with your bare hands. If you don't catch them right away, they leave not because you suck and you deserve to be laughed at, but because they're leaving angrily. They're leaving to save YOU from THEM.

I wonder what the point of losing durability here is, especially since it's a small fraction

You get DIY recipes for golden tools so you can always make another, but imo they are not worth using since golden nuggets are so rare and their durability is a joke considering how much effort goes into getting them. Golden axe and shovel should at least be more than double the durability of the previous tier, and the golden tools should all be customizable as well. I'm pretty much just gonna hang my golden tools in my house as trophies whenever I get them
