Having played a bunch of this game, once thing that really struck me is that the games are so strong thematically, especially the "war" type games. Ikari Warriors and POW really feel like they could have been 1980s action movies.

I wonder if anyone has done this kind of classic arcade gaming better? Capcom had Commando, I suppose. But this SNK classics are gritty, with fast action, realistic violence (for the day) and amazing music.

Assault Heroes 1 & 2 and Capcom's own Commando reboot from the height of the Xbox 360/Playstation 3 era are the only ones I'm aware of in this genre born out of Taito's Front Line and Capcom's own Commando and Gun.Smoke.

Edit: I guess I misunderstood. You weren't asking if such games are still created in today's era with countless retro styled games from small independent publishers. My personal favorite here is Capcom. Love Commando, Mercs, and Gun.Smoke.

Have you played Heavy Barrel? While I wouldn't say it's better, it compares favorably to SNK's efforts. For several reasons including sharing the same LS-30 rotary joystick, it really feels like one of these SNK run and gun overhead shooters. Was on Data East Arcade Classics for the Wii and recently appeared on the Switch.
