Easily Chrom. I liked Roy's moveset, but I wished he didn't have that sweetspot "gimmick" that defeats the purpose of swordfighters.

that defeats the purpose of swordfighters.
How do you know what the purpose of swordfighters is?

Because in a game like this, a character with more range like a sword is meant to use that range. Marth/Roy's moveset was specifically designed for Marth's tipper too. Roy's gimmick was counterproductive.

Never really thought of it that way.

What kind of character/weapon would be more suited for the "weak at long range, strong at close range" gimmick?

I don't know, but it's definitely not a sword. Especially one like the Binding Blade, which was actually a ranged weapon in Roy's game.

I agree Chrom is super fun to play, and after playing FE Awakening he easily became one of my favorite Lords. So having him in Smash is amazing, and he finally got in out of pure popularity.

I would say axes/tomahawks.

Kratos could fill the axe gap, tomahawk IDK, maybe an AC character?
