So a few people have been asking whether certain amiibo are compatible in this game. In this topic I will reveal the answer:

All figurine or doll amiibo that register as playable characters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will produce Figure Players; so do Isabelle trading card amiibos. Most figurines that do not register as playable characters (as well as Yarn Poochy) give free Spirits, but not all. AFAIK, cards are not compatible aside from Isabelle.

While in Japanese, this handy chart shows most figures: https://www.nintendo.co.jp/hardware/amiibo/chart/chart_soft.html?codes=aaaba_switch

But allow me to turn it into text for you and fill in the gaps.

THESE AMIIBO PRODUCE FIGURE PLAYERS

Figure players are customizable AI fighters that are saved to the amiibo itself. They can be trained as sparring partners or doubles teammates. Since the data is saved to the amiibo, you can use the Figure Player on other people's games. They also collect minor treasures as they fight, which you can collect from the "amiibo" menu.

As Smash 4 also had Figure Players, any data on the amiibos can be transferred to Ultimate, but they'll be reverted backwards in level (a level 50 Smash 4 FP becomes a level 12 Ultimate FP.) Since amiibo can only store data from one game at a time, if you have data from any other game, you must erase it before creating a Figure Player.

The FP will match the amiibo; that is, a Luigi amiibo will produce a Luigi Figure Player. Charizard produces a Pokemon Trainer that starts with Charizard out (but can switch to Squirtle and Ivysaur.) All adult Link figures scan simply as Link. You can choose any costume for the FP, but some amiibo will default to certain costumes (Inkling Boy defaults to the blue Inkling, for instance.)

THESE AMIIBO PRODUCE SPIRITS

Spirit-producing amiibo can only be used once per save file, though some amiibo produce the same Spirit and can both be scanned separately for mulitple copies (example: Callie and Marie). They don't write any data to the amiibo, and thus won't erase whatever is already on them (aside from the Wedding Mario amiibo, which also produce FPs.)

Though each amiibo can only be scanned once, you can scan as many as you like. These Spirits can be obtained without the amiibo; these are just quick easy copies of them.

Mario series (red base, checkerboard top):
Toad
Waluigi
Boo
Koopa Troopa
Goomba

If my friend and I both have a copy of the same amiibo, would we be able to double dip on that spirit?

Strange that the AC cards don't work. I have a Digby card, and I know Digby is a spirit, but it just said not compatible.
