9B, aMSa, Ranai and Earth has developed the game with the team.

To give you a little background, 9B, Earth, and Ranai are all notable top Smash 4 players in Japan. aMSa is also a top player, but for Melee instead where he's very well known for his incredible Yoshi. Their names are all included in the credits when you beat Classic Mode in this game.

Today, December 7, 2018, Nintendo switch soft "Super Smash Bros. SPECIAL", we have to cooperate in some development.
We cannot answer any questions about it.
There is no plan to participate as a player in the user tournament of this work. Thank you in the future.

aMSa has confirmed that he worked alongside Sakurai and the development team; however, he will not be competing in future Smash Ultimate tournaments. (This may or may not extend to the rest of the players that worked with the dev team)

To be honest, the growth in Sakurai's design philosophy and him going out of his way to finally try to appeal to both casual and competitive players is great. In Brawl or even Smash 4, the idea of him consulting and having top players assist in development would have sounded very unbelievable. I can't thank Sakurai and the team enough for all of the great changes for competitive play in this game.

Also, don't be surprised if Yoshi, Villager, Ryu, and Pit feel a little better in this game, lol.

If only Japanese players actually chose the roster instead of Safe Sakurai, we may have ended up with a better roster.

Why would you help develop the competitive aspect of the game, then not compete in it?

That's a normal thing. If a to help in the making of a game, they usually aren't allowed to play the game as a tournament player (maybe it's just respect, a part of the contract, or something else)
