So with star wars episode 9 coming out lots people said to go watch other space ship with lazer movies as a generic response to not to go see the movie. But then I got thinking, is there really anything else but star wars on big screen? As much as I'm not into the story of the new movies where else can you get epic space battles?

I mean world, vietnam, iraq war movies, ancient, medievil armies, colonial etc there have been tons of movies with huge epic army battles, even fantasy like lord of rings feed that itch. But in terms of space fighting? The only thing that springs to mind is like some of the galactic stuff in marvel movies, and enders game or some tv shows movies like serenity, star trek. Every thing else is like the death star run, hoth, battle for endor, clone wars, battle of coursant, battle at Scarif, even 7 and 8 had fair amount space stuff, ie mostly star wars.

Most seem to be in video game or TV. sins, mass effect, babylon 5, star trek, battlestar, expanse, legend of galactic heroes, crest of the stars, clone wars (also star wars) etc.

I'm sure there are lots of 80's or 60's ones I missed. But in last 20 years star wars pretty much holds that title on the big screen.

Anyone with recommendations, or which one is your favourite, also is star wars up there as the best in field?

Guardians of the Galaxy, especially the first, delivers

Last Starfighter is cheesy but definitely has a charm and the space battles are very well done in spite of the budgetary flaws. Very cool and worth seeing.

Outside of that, it's pretty much just Star Wars or bust.

Very few space battles are what I would call good at all. What comes to mind...

In movies actual space fleet battles are few and far between. A few in Star Wars a couple in Star Trek if you count fleet as any multi-capital ship engagement instead of requiring multiple capital ships on each side, or some number of capital ships in the battle be reached. I think the same criteria would throw in a battle or two from Wing Commander. But yeah for some odd reason it seems like space fleet battles are more common in TV shows for made for TV movies then in big screen movies.
The most devastating defeat is the one which comes when you have stood on the edge of victory.

Glad someone else mentioned, Ender's Game. It is difficult for me to think of more, Star Wars really does have some amazing cinematic space ship battles.
