So besides the fact that the movie was beyond terrible, the ENTIRE MOVIE kept switching between 3 different aspect ratios. Fullscreen, letterbox and a third one. Did this happen at anyone elses showings or was something wrong at my theater?

This technique works in a film like The Grand Budapest Hotel because it's already a quircku film full of charm. It would add nothing to a CGI action flick.

Age of Extinction 3D version was the same. The action scenes looked way better in 16:9 than 2.35:1. The pure 2D version looked poorly shot as the 16:9 scenes were cropped to 2.35:1.
Why not shoot the whole movie in 16:9?

Bingo. Same thing with Transformers. Even if its "terrible" (who is expecting cinematic genius from robots fighting each other?) Im watching it in IMAX to get the full experience (of disappointment apparently but whatever).
If that's your decision.....PREPARE YOURSELF!!!

Yeah thats what was happening here. Most people dont notice it. Directors will try to steer your vision away from the perimeter before they switch
I did it for The Motherland

Except Transformer is way clumsier. They have different aspect ratios within the same talking scene switching from one character to the other.
