Has anyone noticed this happen in their games. I've never had this issue until recently but on more than one occasion now I've noticed both sims in my played households and townie/npc Sims that I created and intend to play later on wearing clothing I didn't set for them.

It's actually really irritating me as one of those affected Sims is supposed to be Toshio Saeki from The Grudge/Ju-On movies. I thought it would be really entertaining to see him and his mother just randomly spawning as townies in the game but I keep seeing him dressed in full on winter gear and Harry Potter Glasses which completely goes against his character in the films. (Plus it's the middle of summer so even by the games own logic it makes no sence)

I don't so much care if it's a random NPC but when I'm making characters based off of film or other media I don't want the game dressing them up in random outfits, y'know?

Anyone else experiencing this?

Yeah, it started when they released Seasons. All you have to do is go into the select an outfit mode, choose the outdoor category and change it. They’ll automatically change into that when they go outside but you can always just set it for whatever you want.

Could you elaborate a little further into this? I'm trying what you suggested but I'm not seeing an option that lets you select a certain outfit everytime you leave the house.
I mean I know you get several custom outfits for every scenario but what I'm trying to say is the game is dressing my sims in random clothing that I didn't pick for them in anyway, shape or form and it's ticking me off as some of those sims are based off of characters from movies and tv shows and I want them to keep that look.

Click on a dresser, then “plan outfit” or whatever the actual wording is. You’ll just choose an outdoor outfit the same as you did for everyday, formal, sleep, swimwear, etc. Then when your sim goes outside in weather, they’ll change into the outfit you chose rather than the default one that the game assigned to you.

No sadly that didn't do anything. This isn't an issue that affects the household I'm playing with when I use that household. The issue is the townie NPC sims that populate the neighbourhood wearing clothing I didn't assign for them when I'm not playing as them.
Like Toshio from The Grudge movies wearing winter clothing during the summer or Angry Grandpa walking around the neighbourhood in a hot dog costume and slippers, stuff like this.

These people seem to be suffering from the same problem and there's no mention of a solution in sight.

You are right though, the problem seems to be tied with Seasons.

Nope this happened before Seasons, I had the same problem too it's annoying! One household that I made but don't play, all had multiple same attires that I didn't assign. Then one sim in my household also started wearing clothes I didn't assign

I've noticed this to and hopefully they'll release an update that turns this "on" or "off" 'cause clearly it's causing more annoyance than pleasant surprise.

Personally, it's not bothered me since the kinds of clothes my "old" sims (and NPC sims I created or just happen to exist) occasionally switch into aren't either ugly/out-of-character or so random as to be as if someone just clicked "random" when setting the clothes and ran with it.

In fact, for me, it's mostly been an amusement because it's been building off of what my old sims were doing without my supervision (like my first Me becoming a bodybuilder lol and dressing like one).

But I can definitely see this being more annoying than amusing in the long run if there isn't an "off" button or some kind of regulation/pattern for it.

Yeah it seems to be selective over which sims it affects and which ones it doesn't, at least in my experience so far.
From what little I've managed to find out, it only seems to really affect the sims during certain weather conditions but Lemonsnatch mentioned this has been a problem before seasons was introduced so I don't know.

I've also noticed the game is really selective over which sims spawn in the game world as NPCS and which ones don't which I can't help but find bizarre. Certain sims I've created I'll never see in the game world even if I'm actively keeping a lookout for them where as other sims I'll see everywhere I go multiple times a day.

It's very weird how this game is balanced.

I guess either way if there ever is going to be an update to fix all of this the PC gamers will be the first to know about it. We're still months behind them in terms of DLC packs so hopefully we won't get left behind, but I do worry that EA is just in it to make as much money as they can then move on to the next thing.

I'll never forget it took them an entire year to patch the console version of the sims 3 when it launched completely and utterly broken to the point where it was unplayable. People are quick to forgive and forget this stuff when they get their patches but god damn if you bought that game day one like I did...

I built houses and moved into them the NPCs I created, and made visual edits to the random NPCs every now and then. I can't say I've noticed any patterns, except there's apparently a limited amount of names the game selects from as well as a limited number of looks since I've seen a lot of unrelated randos with the same last names and even sims from a household with one name but different actual last names. Who knows, I guess? I kinda like randomness in the world when I'm not directly involved in it, but the actual creation of NPC sims appears to be procedural and without that many different results (at least as far as names and clothes are concerned).

Well, EA has a bad history but Maxis is the one that handles the direct making of the Sims and arguably has a much better history dating back to the 90's. I'm fairly optimistic since I enjoy what I've bought and spent hundreds of hours without regrets, and most of the major DLC packs available to PC players have become available to console players in merely a year whereas they had to wait 4 or more (which of course makes sense since they're porting rather than remaking and all that) and also they solved/mitigated a lot of technical issues that bothered me on the console release (like delays in actions and very dumb NPC maids).

I'm waiting for Get Together to go on sale lol.

Funny you mention it, because I played the Sims 3 on the Xbox 360 (I never liked that console much due to technical issues, but I did play the Sims 3 a lot on that console) and since I didn't have Internet I never played the patched version of it! I can't remember the bugs though, although I'm pretty sure slow-down and delay in commands-to-action was a thing at some point. Ultimately I was just happy as a kid to be playing my first console Sims game that allowed for multi-tier buildings, custom designs for clothing and furniture, a great variety in furniture types, and even cars lol!

I'd have a hard time recommending the Sims 4 to a PC player who owns the Sims 3 and most of its DLC, but I'd easily recommend the Sims 4 to a console player who's only played/owned console Sims games. Compared to console sims games in the past, the 4th is the freest and most expansive yet. Unfortunately I can't customize the design of clothes, which occasionally is annoying when I'm trying to match clothing colors and all that, but at least I get all the new stuff that the Sims 4 has to offer without any console-based restirctions save not being able to download stuff made by other users and mods (which is still significant, but again I'm comparing to other consoles sims. In my experience, only the original Sims for console has no technical issues and appears to even be a 3D upgrade to the original PC Sims).
