I hate Kirin and haven't tried him in ages since SoS is generally a cart fest, but I just did AT Kirin for the first time with success with an SoS group!

I just wanted to make sure I wasn't overdoing the gear setup by having level 3 of para, stun, and blight resistance? IIRC, the blight resistance is needed so you don't take extra lightning damage right?

I brought Herbal Medicine and Antidote to the fight, but Kirin wasn't on the platforms much with the poison plants or para toads; is it random whether Kirin fights in those areas? I also didn't get much use out of Astera Jerky to help with red damage healing.

I was surprised we didn't break his horn, not sure if it is extra tough in the AT version?!

You want the Thunder Resistance skill, not Blight Resistance.
- Reduces elemental damage, which blight res doesn't.
- Adds +10 defense at Lvl 3 which is....something, but Blight doesn't add any so it's still better.
- Prevents blight if you can hit +20 thunder resistance, which is pretty easy to do since the skill gives +20.
Elemental Resistance is superior to Blight Resistance in general really. Blight Res is pretty much useless.

You want to get a GS, build a crit draw set, and hit him really hard till he dies, without getting hit.

While defensive builds aren't completely wasted on AT Kirin, they really move you from 1-2 shots to 2-3 shots. With how easy Kirin is to predict (especially without a palico), if you get hit while fighting Kirin, you're most probably fighting Kirin wrong.

Also, the area in which Kirin spawns is a bit random, to the best of my knowledge.

On the horn, it only breaks when he's low on health (33% or 25% health or less, I don't have the exact numbers). It should break in every single successful Kirin run, so if you say your team killed AT Kirin without breaking the horn, I'd imagine y'all were doing something horribly wrong.
I used to have a good signature, then I got modded for it.
Now I shall try to think of something edgier to put here.

OMG I didn't know you only needed +20 to not get blighted. So that works for fire, water, ice, and dragon as well to prevent blights? Just get level 3 (+20) and get triple benefits of extra elemental resistance for a particular monster, a little extra defense and you are blight proof?

Well I say level 3 because whatever armor you are wearing might not provide much of whatever element you are concerned with, but obviously you need to not be negative to get +20 with set decorations and / or charm.

Between Level 3 Element Resist and eating for Elemental Defense Large (+15 Element Defense), I find you can usually get off to a decent start.
But honestly, if you're at Level 3 Res and you're still not past 20, I'd suggest just rolling Vitality Level 3 and then Thunder Res Mantle/Temporal Mantle. Stun res 3 is fine if you find yourself getting hit a lot.

Yeah, like other people were saying, Thunder Res should cover you. If you don't get blighted, you won't get that increased chance of stunning so there's a 2 in 1 benefit there. I don't remember exactly what move paralyzes you, but if it's a constant issue for you that's something you could try running too.

Pretty sure it's random whether it starts up in the coral or down at the area directly outside the upper camp. If it does start on the platforms though, you can trigger the area hazards early to avoid getting caught by them mid battle.

I'd swap to Blaze LBG (for Guts)... But I've got the DDR down so I don't really need it. So I'm still using Styx because I can prevent some carts with Recovery 2 when responding to SOS calls.

what weapons are you good with TC?

the weapon choice helps with this fight. ranged weapons make it a little easier (you have to hit the head though), and are a little safer, but most things will one shot you. I REALLY like using spread 3's for this fight with the "Glutton" HBG, it's pretty easy solo, and you don't NEED the QoL skills, because you can chain knockdowns and KOs.

Long 4 gunlance is also a solid choice here. you only need artillery +3 (comes from the charm), Capacity Boost, Focus +3, and Evade Extender +3... all of those can be obtained on a set without decorations, letting you get health Boost 3, para res +3, and thunder res +3 quite easily, without compromising your DPS.

for other weapons, try to get tool specialist +3, and you can then chain temporal and thunder proof mantles. that combined with over 20 thunder res, and the fight is easy.
