I just watched the Death of Superman, and the JL were getting their butts handed to them like I have never seen before, and that got me wondering. Has there ever story line addressing hero(not side character) runs away because it is hopeless.

Yes. A tactical retreat is usually a smart thing to do against a losing battle. Look at most desolate futures where the villains rule. The heroes ran to fight another day.

That's technically a major inspiration behind Miles Morales, is it not? He ran away during Ult. Peter Parker's final fight when he could've assisted. Of course, that was before he'd become Spider-man.

The hero running away is a key point of Avatar: The Last Airbender, if you're interested in cartoons.

Ok, what did I miss? I don't remember Miles being in a position to help Peter in his final fight. Was this a recent retcon?

That is a good one.

I was just watching Doomsday take everyone out and I would think if someone like the Wildcat was part of the team and he saw that he should just run the other way.

Quite a few times. The thing is, they usually come back with a plan to win. It's much rarer to have the hero run away and just leave it for someone else entirely.

The recent Plastic Man miniseries has him panic and run away when fighting Man-Bat.
