I was recently poking around on the unlock potential screen, and I noticed that my Gunter needed 19,700 feathers rather than the usual 20,000. While I thought it was unusual, I wrote it off thinking it has perhapd because he was inherently weaker than others... A second ago, however, I realized he had been merged with another 4* Gunter, and I had a thought.

After confirming with the few other units I have merged, I can say thay merging units--of the same rarity--decreases the number of feathers needed to unlock potential. From what I have, I can say:

4* +1: 19,700
4* +2: 19,400

Thus it seems that, in the case of 4* units, each merge decreases the cost by 300 feathers. I have no idea to what degree this is scaled (if at all) for lower rarities though.

Nice find. Of course, the pluses from merging don't carry over when you unlock potential, so it's a bit of a waste.

It lowers the cost the same amount as you would get if you sent them home.

It's probably their way of saying "Sorry we're making all your merges useless once you awaken this unit's potential! :D Have a small Feather discount!"

Someone posted this earlier today, and yes, there really isn't any benefit to it unless you planned to promote that unit, anyway, as the stat bonuses are lost upon promotion and you could instead sell the duplicate for the same amount of feathers that would in turn work on everyone, not just that one unit.

To an extent, I agree, but if the alternative is releasing the hero, then you may consider merging as it offers both SP and a feather deduction of an equal amount. If you have a unit that can't be pulled as a 5 star, and you intend to promote them, it's certainly more beneficial.

Ah, I missed this. It's application is certainly narrow, but I thought it was an interesting find nonetheless.

You're right, and I forgot to factor in the fact that units keep their SP and skills when they promote, so I'll probably end up doing this if I get a duplicate of a character I enjoy and plan on raising up.
