what the point of this? Is there any bonus to it when you go for the goals they want? I thought it was for the single ones til I found that I can set them that way myself and still have the 1.5x bonus.

It basically just gives you a preset option for when you wanna switch foci. It also is there to give newbies a hint as to what proficiencies are needed for each class.
I've been by this damn tree since 1997. Will someone please pick me up?

The strangest one for me was when Sylvain randomly asked to focus on faith and reason. At that time he was a paladin (previously mage) en route to dark knight, so he was already training in reason, but the faith request came completely out of left field.
