indeed, almost every FE player clears the board regardless of what the objective is.

You bet your ass I'm killing everyone I can for that sweet, sweet (skill) EXP. To me, purposely skipping out on EXP would be a waste of the real-life money I spent to purchase the game.

I couldn't agree more. Not a chance in hell I'm finishing a battle until I've...

KILLED EVERY LAST ONE OF THEM!
I'm tired of following my dreams. I'm just going to ask where they're going and hook up with them later.

People seem to be missing the point that there is a difference in design philosophy between the seize the throne maps in classic Fire Emblem and Awakening, Fates, and TH's rout chapters.

An indoors seize the throne map gave you more to do. Beating Thieves to chests, sometimes some allies to rescue, etc.

3DS/TH Rout chapters are a bunch of flat maps with little to no other objectives to aim for.

My guess is it's due - at least in part - to that video going around titled "How FE Players Actually See Battle Goals" (or something).

Basically it lists off numerous objectives like "defend this point", "seize this point", "get to this point", etc and after every one it plays the "KILL EVERY LAST ONE OF THEM!" clip since, indeed, almost every FE player clears the board regardless of what the objective is.

Okay I can see why it is a trend now. And yes, traditionally you want to kill all units for exp for but this is not a traditional game. There are plenty of opportunities to be overleveled. It is not like the Tellius era where grinding is not possible. I can see though why the mentality is still there.

Complete tangent, but that comic reminds me of one of my favorite Game Grumps Animated bits:
