True, though it suffer from the same issue as IVA. And absolute mess of a story.

Atlus and Intelligent Systems seems to both have incredible difficulty hiring anything close to competent writers for the best part of the last decade.

Unfortunately it's not just them. This is happening all over JRPGs, sadly, unless I'm just looking in the wrong places. Even the good folks at Monolith Soft aren't delivering in the way they used to (although Xenoblade 2 is still at least "good enough" in that regard so far)

tales and disgaea fans will try to trick you into thinking that their games' writing are any good
tales of berseria is really poorly handled "darkness" and disgaea 5 is just mega cringe and padding

RPGs in general hardly ever had a solid story with convincing dialogues, mostly because the writers are forced to massively overwrite to fill up 20-40 hours of content; in this regard, the best written RPG could never rise to a tenth of a decent movie's writing because of this restriction.

Notwithstanding, thinking back, I believe the last RPG I remember truly enjoying its story/atmosphere was DDS2. There's a plethora of great titles beforehand, but nothing I can remember vividly after that. At the very least, Etrian Odyssey games somehow managed the minimalist story a hella better than Dragon Quest ever did, which is worth a mention.

It was Hashino himself that wrote P5, and one thing is for sure, he is no Tadashi. And the less said about Miyata the better. I much rather stick to games such as Caligula, Cyber Sleuth, FFXII and Nier Automata (or the older SMT games) when it comes to the narrative experience.
The worst readers are those who proceed like plundering soldiers: they pick up a few things they can use, soil and confuse the rest, and blaspheme the whole.

FFXII

It felt too much like a punch in the gut in comparison to FFT for my own taste, as Matsuno delivered a far more fleshed out and engaging narrative experience in the same universe years before.

Final Fantasy Tactics and Tactics Ogre are still some of the best stories the medium has had IMO.
There was a part of me that was hoping we'd get to see him work that same magic with Unsung Story (yes I backed that project, I had a lot of money to burn at the time, gimme a break), but not only am I not sure how much he's got to do with it anymore, I'm not super confident it'll come out at all (and if it does, I doubt it'll be the game I wanted when I gave them my money)

From what the new team revealed a few weeks back on the project's blog, it seems like Matsuno had a fine story in mind. It's a shame the guys who hired him initially were a bunch of bloody wankers with no idea how to actually develop a game.

Hmmm...I heard about Unsung Story once or twice and never again afterwards. What happened exactly?

Basically the project was funded but Playdek was incompetent and probably would have never been able to deliver a satisfactory product. The project was picked up by Little Orbit, a company I had never heard of, some time ago. I still don't expect to see the game any time soon, but these guys seem passionate about doing it right, so I have a little more hope now.

From the games I've played, the stories i liked (ordered form favorite to least), would go: Persona 3, Devil survivor, Devil survivor 2, SMT 4, SMT Soul hackers, SMT 4 Apocalypse, Devil kids Dark, Devil kids Light, Revelations the demon slayer(last bible), Devil survivor 2 record breaker.
Yes I've seperated DS2 and DS2:RB. DS2:RB has s*** lazy writing that spits on the character development from DS2. Anyways all but the last 2 where quite enjoyable for me
