Tier List Template: https://tierlists.com/create/top-games-1998

As before, everyone can rank their faves how they want to based on a selection of the 50 or so top user rated games from that year on various database sites. You can download a pic when finished without logging in and post it here, or post a top 20 list. The plan is to keep going until 1999, about twice a week and finishing at the end of 2019.

I'm going by original release dates and mostly original versions of games unless there's a consensus about a port being better or it's significantly different like Rygar on NES for example - if not you can see the original version as a catch-all for other versions.

1998 was just a killer year. Whatever your tastes are, this year has to at least get some major recognition, it was just CLASSIC after CLASSIC, and you could see the horizons expanding further than ever with how ambitious things were getting.

If you ran the world, it would probably be on fire right now.

There's a lot that I haven't played enough or need to refresh my memory of from this year, but I remember it fondly.
At the time I mainly played F2, BG and Starcraft. Well, mainly Starcraft for a couple of years!

RE2 was S at the time but found it a bit hard to go back to recently, I should play the remake.

Edit:
One vote for Heretic 2 and one for Jade Cocoon elsewhere.

Banjo, OoT and RE2 are masterpieces in their genres IMO. Maybe RE2 is a little too easy in replays, but I still get super immersed in the atmosphere and the setting. Metal Gear Solid is a recent one for me, it's just so full of detail that I feel like anything below S would be unfair. I love how many different ways you can approach each room and the bosses.

I played King of Fighters 98 for the first time a month ago and I was hooked. The roster is fantastic, movement feels great with the dashing and rolls, feedback is about as perfect as it gets. I've been trying to find my main team and there are so many interesting characters that I'm having trouble choosing only 3. Can't wait to try other KoF games.

Parasite Eve would be an S if you could skip cutscenes. That's literally all it needed. As is, replaying PE1 is an every once in a while kind of thing. The game itself is excellent, though. Being not so into RPGs, I felt comfortable with a battle system where I had decent freedom of movement and positioning. Rockman & Forte is very good, but the stage select is a bit limiting for someone used to the early Mega Man games. I haven't played F-Zero X much since I unlocked all the cars back in the day. I love it, but I got kinda burned out on it. Marvel vs. Capcom and Last Blade 2 are both solid 8/10s for me.

Alpha 3 is cool, I just hate the CPU. Too jumpy and spammy. Grim Fandango is a classic, but I mean, it's a point and click style adventure, there's not much to it... outside of not being point and click. Metal Slug 2 would be an A, maybe even an S if it wasn't for the slowdown. I hear Metal Slug X fixes most of it, gotta check it out sometime. Crash 3 is Crash 2 But More of It. Sonic Adventure... I want to love this game, I really do. But the camera, ugh. It refuses to love me back.
And this time!

I wanna see Tenchu in some more lists, especially from MGS fans! It may not be on the same narrative level, but the stealth gameplay is solid and the atmosphere is stunning.

I find it weird that people are rating Brood War only, jumping in since Chapter 4.

Games are getting longer already, no wonder I've played less games, compared to mid 90s and back.
