Tier List Template: https://tierlists.com/create/top-games-1997

Merry Christmas! As before, everyone can rank their faves how they want to based on a selection of the 50 or so top user rated games from that year on various database sites. You can download a pic when finished without logging in and post it here, or post a top 20 list. The plan is to keep going until 1999, about twice a week and finishing at the end of 2019.

I'm going by original release dates and mostly original versions of games unless there's a consensus about a port being better or it's significantly different like Rygar on NES for example - if not you can see the original version as a catch-all for other versions.

97 was my best year in life and for games. Been downhill ever since. But I'll never be over the hill not in the car I drive

Hard to believe this isn't the best year ever for me, SO many great games including the best P&C game i've played, the best RTS ever and a bunch of strong first entries in franchises that would go on to greatness.

A couple might be hard to make out unless you know the games: Total Drivin' is next to GTA, Porsche Challenge is next to Croc, V-Rally is next to Test Drive 4. Treasures of the Deep is on the top row.
If you ran the world, it would probably be on fire right now.

Managed to beat Turok 1 today, though not without the all keys and all weapons cheats.

S tier is solid for me. Star Fox 64 is one of those games I never get sick of. Short, memorable and addicting. SotN and Mega Man X4 have their dull moments and balance issues, but they're IMO unforgettable experiences with so much going on that the good outweighs the bad by a ton.

A has some stuff I haven't played since I was a kid like Diddy Kong Racing, but I feel pretty confident about placing them high on the list. Vampire Savior I discovered not even a month ago and it was awesome. That sprite work is still ridiculously impressive. GoldenEye is great but admittedly I'm kinda bad at it. Only beat it once and I didn't have the higher difficulties + multiplayer experience that everyone had. I used to play Tekken 3 at the Arcades a lot.

I like Crash 2, but it has some annoying elements like backtracking towards the camera and dodgy hitboxes. I go back and forth with this one, it's probably a borderline A-B. Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter is the least creative game in the Versus series with almost all re-used assets (and too many shotos in the roster), but it's still pretty sweet. Theme Hospital is very dear to me even though I never made a lot of progress in it. It was just fun to see all the silly diseases and create the hospital environment from scratch. This thread made me wanna play it again.
And this time!

Well, well, well... lordjers moved SotN up from 1/5 stars here on his GFAQs rating to a B in this topic. Quite the improvement!

Yes, I remember you saying you were trying to bring the review average score down since you think it's overrated.

It is, but look at how lenient I am even with games that disappoint me!
