I just caught a rerun of the episodes and the newer ones look very different from the old ones. I personally prefer their old style and I'm just curious as to why they changed it in the first place.

I liked Jake's old Dragon look way more than the new one they did.

Once i got use to the season two designs I preferred them and the season one designs started looking to generic and ordinary to me. I don't know why the change was made but I actually think it was for the better.
I miss the days when we actually had to give something a chance to form an opinion. Before the internet changed things.

I happen to think that the animation change made the show easier to watch. I don't know why they changed the style though. Probably a money issue.

When a new writer was brought in, he said the art style needed to change. It would make animation flow smoother, and he disliked how buff Jake was.

The writing got better, but I still preferred the old art style. Just thinking about the unicorns in the second season's opening makes me want to vomit.

I remember one of the creators/writers had a blog where he had a post about why they changed it, but I can't remember where it is (it might not even be up anymore).

Was about to say something to that effect: the first season or two were god-awful but that was due to the god-awful writing (overabundance of mostly made up slang and paint by the numbers plots) rather than the animation style.

Honestly didn't have much preference as far as the art was concerned.

This is why I like the animation change. Makes more sense to me that dragon forms would look exactly like their human forms.
