The game says there are supposed to be 50 of them, but I only found around 27. Is it possible to find them all on the first try or is it something you need to come back to later on? Maybe I'm just not looking hard enough for them.

I think I did find them all first try. Some of them are hidden pretty well, IIRC.

As far as I've seen so far (up to World 8 or so in my playthrough) the kingdom coins are never locked behind anything beyond progress in that kingdom itself - once you've dealt with the final boss of a level, you should have access to all of the coins provided you can find them.
I'm so Monster Hunter, the only mail I send is is Gmail.

Okay thanks. They must be hidden really well.

There are quite a few very tricky locations for the purple coins in Cap Kingdom. Remember some can be hidden in challenge areas, but Cappy will say upon revisiting a completed challenge area if there is anything still inside. Remember, they're always "out" though--though they may be hidden behind things, you don't have to break things open to get them to appear.

As long as you can capture Paragoombas outside and access the challenge sections, I think you should definitely be able to get them all.
I count triple because I'm the False Spring Queen! So you ARE outnumbered, cakesniffers.
Birdo deserves a bigger role in the Mario series!

If you are having trouble, I believe a Bowser Amiibo can help.

What does Bowser Amiibo do?

It makes purple coins show on the screen. But not on the map. So, it helps to find some when you're having trouble.
