I've looked in the marsh for about an hour and only found 2, that can't be normal right?

I ran across one, literally, on a road and was nowhere near a swamp

Keep spamming eagle vision and look for the “vapour trails”

Also, if your horse starts to get upset, that means there’s a predator close by - which includes snakes. They also show up as a red dot on your mini map when close by.

I've been doing this, most of the time it's a musk rat or snapping turtle.

I encountered a large number of them just north of Saint Denis as I was exiting. I also for some reason encountered quite a few riding through the mountains to the White Arabian area. It was pretty high up and on narrow trails, where I REALLY needed my horse to not spook... You can also spot snakes in the bayou area just treading water in the swamp. You will just see their head over the water. But watch out for gators of course. Good luck!
