Checkerboarding? That's all just engine techniques and tricks to maintain a stable framerate and focus on what's viewable and important.

From what I read and understand is most most game use checkerboarding to fill in the gaps of each pixel and makes it sub 4k. But from what I read that the way rdr2 was made it didn't have checkerboarding in mind so most of the pixel went to wrong places and made it look blurry. Xbox 1 X had native 4k so it didn't have that problem. And back at launch if I forced my pro to 1080p it was crisp and clear.

I think they've tweaked it a bit but it still doesn't look that great.
