Buck Trinket should be added to your list
I find it really is a pre requisite for increasing quantity of 3* pelts

Also somebody made a smart Alec comment about Birds not giving pelts

But they do give feathers and feather count increases with * rating

Buck Trinket doesn't prevent degradation, it gives a chance to increase quality upon pickup/skinning and it doesn't work even close to reliably on large game like wolves and cougars.

Has done for me, maybe not as often as smaller game , but it has done so

If you hit them in the heart, it's a clean kill too. Head or heart.

Does rifle ammo really work on Foxes and Coyotes?

I use improved arrows on beavers. Gets me perfect pelts.
