How about Super Mario 64's Bowser Trick?

If you've played the game, remember it's to avoid grabbing and throwing Bowser, but keep letting him breathe fire, which turns into coins. Admittedly, it can take a couple of hours to amass a bunch of coins (and all they do is turn into extra lives after beating Bowser.)

Admittedly, the money isn't used the same way as money in other games (it just adds up and becomes extra lives after beating the level), but it is still a money grind.

A save scum way in GTA San Andreas was to save your game, bet all your money on the long shot horse and hope it came in. If it didn't, then reload and try again. The odds for the long shots were like 40 to 1 so winning twice is 1.6 million dollars and it's relatively early in the game.
