Got another one to add to this list.
I'm playing The Bard's Tale Trilogy on X1, never having played anything from the series before, and am really enjoying it. The problem is, when you go to save your game, it defaults to the top save file in the list, which is the reserved slot for the auto-save. And you can't manually overwrite a save in the auto-save slot. If you try to overwrite the auto-save, it pops up a message saying "you can't save your game in this slot." So every time you save, instead of just pressing A to be asked to confirm whether you want to overwrite your slot, you have to first press down to go to the top available slot in the list. Why they didn't make the cursor default to the first available position, I don't know. Why give someone a UI option that you can't actually select?
Anyway, it's an annoying, minor inconvenience.

Popped in my Super Mario 64 DS cartridge and I now have another minor inconvenience. When you're using the default control scheme - which doesn't involve any touchscreen controls - after you collect a star and are shunted back to Peach's castle, the game prompts you to save and continue, continue without saving, or save and quit. But you can't use the d-pad or c-pad to select an option, and you can't use the A button to confirm your choice. You have to tap the screen. It's a needless annoyance that requires you to move your thumb away from the buttons to the screen for a brief period of time, when they easily could have made it confirm with A.

Oh yeah I remember that. Very annoying. Mario galaxy also does this for saving after a level (you have to use motion controls) and this is painfully still so in the all stars version when you use a pro controller even.

Although further experimentation proved that pressing the start button will select and confirm the "save and continue" option, so there's that at least.

I have one, from the Crash Bandicoot N Sane Trilogy.
On the load/save screen, the button that you would *normally* use for confirmations is the Load button. But 9 times out of 10 you're on that screen to save mid-game, and it's very easy to just press the wrong button and almost load the selected save. Or actually load it, if you just accept the popup 'are sure you want to' message.

If you have Autosave turned on, it's not the worst thing in the world, since you can load the autosave and try to make a manual save again. But if you have autosave turned *off* for any reason... goodbye progress.

I don't know if this quirk is specific to Crash, or if there are other games that combine the Save and Load screens into one screen with different buttons for Save and Load.
Prinny rule number one: All posts must contain at least one 'dood'. So here it is, dood.

That seems more like a serious design flaw than a minor inconvenience. Any time a game programs your muscle memory to associate a button with an action, and then uses that button in an inconsistent manner - ESPECIALLY when the inconsistency involves the potential losing of game progress - that's a big problem.

Of course, a Top 10 Serious Design Flaws list would also fly. Or maybe the Top 10 Ways to Accidentally Lose Progress.

Games that make your character wheel around to turn rather than a quick step of sorts, taking up way more time/space and likely causing some kind of issue one way or another. GTAV comes to mind immediately. I noticed it in the redo of Super Mario 64 as well, and I don't remember it doing that originally, but I'd have to check to make sure.

It's weird that you bring that up, because I randomly felt like playing SM64DS last week, so I started a new save file and tracked down about 45 stars or so. And I also noticed the wheeling around, which I didn't remember being present in the original. You can still instantly turn a 180, but anything less than a complete flip will cause a wheel, which has lead to some unexpected deaths.

I've been playing No Man's Sky on X1, and you can't customize the controls at all. That's different levels of bad depending on how you like your controls, but the defaults are 99% what I'd have them set to anyway, with one exception: sprint is bound to the right stick push, and scan is bound to left stick push. Virtually all the games I've played with sprinting have bound it to the left stick, of course. But I'm also playing Rise of the Tomb Raider, which has sprinting on the left stick as normal, but the "survivor's sense" on the right stick - the exact opposite of NMS.

Something I'm starting to notice now. Games auto-starting after loading. In the past this wasn't an issue, but with SSDs, the game loads so fast that there is barely a loading screen. You might not think that's bad but what if the game gives you helpful hints on those screens? You can't read them.

Yeah, I've been annoyed at that occasionally. It's worst when the game doesn't allow you to peruse those hints elsewhere, either.
