- Nintendo never released Pro Wrestling (NES) on VC?
WarGreymon77 posted... Or even the new NES mini? It seems really weird to me. I thought it was a popular game. I've never played it before. Sadly, no, it's never been released on the Virtual console on any Nintendo system with a VC such as the Wii, Wii U, New 3DS, etc. I don't know why. The game was published by Nintendo when it was released for the NES. While the developer of the game was a different company, the copyright on the game says "copyright 1986 Nintendo", so Nintendo does own the rights to the game. Also, NONE of the wrestlers in the game are real wrestlers (there are some that are inspired off of real wrestlers, like Hayabusa is inspired off of real life pro wrestler Antonio Inoki, but Hayabusa is different enough to avoid any legal problems). There is absolutely no reason why this game can't get a release on VC (and it was popular back in the day). I guess whoever is in charge of Nintendo's VC services for all their systems (Wii U, New 3DS ,etc) is unaware of this game? Confidence? It's nothing but an illusion. |
Guess they don't release it for the same reason they still haven't released games like Mario Party 1/3... My collection (and progress) of games: www.backloggery.com/mavarac |

Oh yeah I forgot about those... then I agree, hope they either edit them or just release Mario Party 3. My collection (and progress) of games: www.backloggery.com/mavarac |
Seems odd that they never made a Super Pro Wrestling or a Pro Wrestling Wii. |
WarGreymon77 posted... Seems odd that they never made a Super Pro Wrestling or a Pro Wrestling Wii. It might have to do with the guy who created Pro Wrestling for NES. While Nintendo owns the game Pro Wrestling for NES and even published the game, the game was developed by a company called "Try".... which was made up primarily by a guy named MASATO MASUDA. Masato Masuda, after he completed Pro Wrestling for Nintendo, went on to change the name of his company called "Try" to "Human Entertainment" and decided to move away from being exclusive to Nintendo and he made a new wrestling game series for multiple platforms that he had the ownership to. The name of that new game he made was called "Fire Pro Wrestling" (the first and second game came out as exclusives for the PC Engine, the Japanese counterpart to the Turbografx-16, in 1989 for the first game and 1991 for the second game. Kind of weird they were PC Engine only and didn't show up on the NES). Later on, Fire Pro Wrestling went on to have tons and tons of sequels on multiple systems such as Super Nintendo, Playstation 2, etc, etc. Meanwhile, Nintendo owned the Pro Wrestling NES game... but they never bothered to do anything more with the game (despite it being a success). My guess is that Nintendo didn't bother with a sequel to the NES Pro Wrestling game for these reasons: With the rise of licensed wrestling games like Acclaim's WWF games and FCi's WCW games that came out during the NES days (the first was 1989's WWF Wrestlemania for the NES, which came out three years AFTER Pro Wrestling for NES) and with the continuation of those licensed games into the Super Nintendo, as well as having to compete against Masato Masuda's Fire Pro Wrestling games (which became a huge success in Japan), maybe someone at Nintendo didn't think a sequel to the NES Pro Wrestling game would do well against all that competition..... especially without the original developer on board. Confidence? It's nothing but an illusion. |
On a very strange note... Back in 2012, someone did a Starman Youtube series (he's one of the characters from NES Pro Wrestling).... with a guy dressed up as Starman interacting with pro wrestler New Jack (formerly from ECW) and a few other pro wrestlers like WWE's Nunzio (A.K.A: ECW's Little Guido) and WCW's Crowbar (who all currently wrestle for indie wrestling promotions): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MhSbtVuchXo While the views for the series are rather low, it does show that there are people out there that care about the NES Pro Wrestling characters. If the Punch Out series can successfully survive without an official boxing license even after the Mike Tyson license expired, I'm pretty sure a new Nintendo Pro Wrestling title with all of Nintendo's original NES Pro Wrestling characters would be successful if marketed the right way. Sadly, it doesn't look like anyone at Nintendo is interested. Anyway, they covered NES Pro-wrestling on "The Video Game Years": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6j-bBlMheMo Great info and footage. Confidence? It's nothing but an illusion. |
Oliver_Oliver posted... zzeennoolloo posted...On a very strange note... They use the Starman character a lot in indie wrestling: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3-20XyJnZv0 I don't think Nintendo cares since it's not on TV in front of a mass audience. Granted, I doubt they are aware of the Starman character being used in various indie wrestling companies given how niche they are (most indie companies are lucky to get 50 people in the audience).
