I think I like Savage as a prospect, but I also think we overpaid for him.

Time will tell, but he is going to have to be have a hell of a year to justify the price.

If AJ Brown fell to us in the 2nd I would be in love with this draft so far

Brown wouldn't be bad. Would still like to see us address the OL.

Ford and Risner are still out there 👀

that's the thing about overpays though. they're always overpays. he could be a hall of famer and it would still be true that we paid more for him than we should have based on his perceived value at the time.

no matter how good Savage is, you can always ask the question: what would be better: Savage by himself? or Savage plus whoever we would have taken with that second fourth?

If he has a great season I will swallow my tongue but at first blush, I'm not going to be enamored with him just because one other team was interested. No one had him as the top safety prospect.

Apparently he was starting to turn heads these past few weeks leading up to the draft and was climbing up a lot of team's draft boards.

This. I was hearing his name pop up a lot in the last few weeks saying he could be the first safety off the board.

Kiper had him at 20 on his board and McShay had him at 28.

The second fourth that's basically a fifth? Ted was great at finding value there but that was the exception, not the norm. For every Sitton or Daniels there are 20 Marcus Hardisons.

We wouldn't have been able to move up to get Savage without trading that second fourth so the other scenario doesn't make any sense.. He was 100% gone otherwise. Knowing that, if he turns out to be a decent starter then it was an amazing trade up.

And as others have said, he was considered to be the best at his position by some draft gurus.

The 2nd 4th was at 118, Comp picks in the round don't begin until #135, it was far from a 5th.

I have more reason to be optimistic over Savage though. A nights rest doesn't make Gary look any better.
