After watching Gou as my intro to the series (which I do NOT recommend), I'm going back and checking out the original anime before the new season starts in Summer. I'm currently on episode 11 and enjoying it quite a bit. Some thoughts so far:

The animation is very...DEEN. Gou didn't look so hot itself sometimes, but it was a lot cleaner for the most part. On the other hand, everyone's a lot more expressive thanks to the more cartoony animation.

Found it interesting that they briefly described using the festival hoe to gouge out a person's innards while they're still alive, which is exaclty what Satoko did to Rika in Gou.

A lot of things in Gou that felt like callbacks or alterations now make more sense, like Rika telling Keiichi to give the doll to Mion. Because we see what happens in the original if he doesn't do that.

On the Satoko's uncle arc. I like how Keiichi sees signs of abuse and his first instinct is to ask Mion to murder him. Then he decides to do it himself after she says no. And I thought the Gou version of him was quick to anger.

I might not comment on every episode going forward, but I'll give my thoughts every now and then. Please no spoilers beyond the latest episode I mention unless it's related to Gou.

Gou was suggested to be a remake before it aired, and it wasn't confirmed until the second episode to be a sequel. But I decided to stick with it because the series creator said newcomers would still be able to enjoy it. I came very close to dropping it a couple times, but I ended up liking the second half a lot.

Yeah, definitely. The second half of Gou was completely a fresh arc. I've never played the VN's, but there's a song "You" that has so many variations and really captures the series' spirit. I'll tell you more about it if you want. The very unfortunate thing is that it never appears in the main anime. It only showed up on an OVA spin-off. It's a very beautiful song, imo, especially one specific version.

I'm aware of You. That's one of those songs you learn about through osmosis. Though I only recently learned that it originated from Higurashi (actually didn't even know the name of the song either, lol).

I wouldn't say it's ruined. I mean it definitely would have been better if I watched the original first, but knowing some of the upcoming twists makes it easier for me to pick up on some of the foreshadowing.

yeah it's sad the anime never used any of the good OST from the VN but the anime has at least some decent ones btw just so you know S1 is agreed to be a crappy adaption and it was so bad ryu07 the author had to step in to fix it by making a filler arc in S2 and after that all of S2 is where the show is when it gets good so don't worry if you are annoyed at S1

Maybe this would work better if you broke it up into the 8 arcs, that way you'd have an easier time talking with others trying to play catchup.

Eh, this is just my personal watchthrough topic. If other people who started with Gou want to chime in, they're free to, but I don't think there's any way I can format this to facilitate a proper discussion with them. I'll always start my posts with an episode number if they want to know when to stop reading.

I have noticed some weird missing details and such, but my knowledge of Gou seems to be filling in most of the blanks. For this early part, I'm mainly interested in how the reused arcs differ.
