Hasn't he been drawing for the Dragon Quest series?

He does character design for other games as well.

AT got Seagal and Shuster'd. The publishers were the ones who made out like bandits. He even admits most of his wealth came from Dr, Schlump and his freelancing work, such as his designs for Dragon Quest and Blue Dragon.

AT has some pretty horrific stories about when he was working on Dragon Ball. Such as the times he was locked in a room by his editor until he would make a deadline. Or being deprived of sick days. Once he had to be hospitalized, and the editors sent someone to hang out by his hospital bed and nag him until he went back to work. Later, he was able to hire underlings, but that still didn't slow down the different ways they tried to screw him. One time he was even threatened by organized crime.

Eventually, he quit the manga industry because of his deteriorating health, and because he was able to get out of his contract. He drew a protest strip where a robot was drawing at an easel with a sick mask tied over its face.

Damn, that's pretty extreme.

It also explain why he based at least two DB villains (Piccolo and Frieza) on his editors.

That's why mangaka are planning a revolt against their editors and publishers for years now.

They don't get proper compensation and leeway for their creative work.

Still, that doesn't quite explains why some mangakas, like HxH's Togashi and Kubo, seem to get away with a lot of stuff.

They pretty much always end up as looking like they came out of a Dragon Ball episode/sketch book anyways.

I can't help but wonder if it's intentional. I mean, Toriyama's style is easily recognized and maybe it's used to hype the game.

It works quite well with the DQ games, that series that itself has barely changed in more than two decades.

They do precisely because of what happened to Toriyama. Shonen Jump unintentionally killed their best money-maker by pushing Toriyama so hard that he quit the first chance he got. SJ has been going considerably easier on its other cash-makers since then. Less profit in the short term, but then the series run longer and everyone makes more money.

But... Bakuman makes most of the editors seem great! Hattori is probably the best person
