The only sensible reason why Gohan would have been ditched as the main character

I've heard about that too, but it's hard to tell if it's true or a fan rumour, but if it's true, the question is why didn't they like him. He was a Super Saiyan just like Goku and he looked identical to Goku with a different haircut. The only real differences were his personality and history. Is that enough for Dragon Ball fans to hate him?

Oh, you're saying that Toriyama ditched Gohan after Gohan became Mystic Gohan? I thought the popular belief was that Gohan was ditched after the Cell Games, or right after the Great Saiyanman stuff and everything after that was Gohan as a side character since Goku was pretty much back/planning to come back.

That doesn't really follow with what goes on in the story or AT's interview, where he says he tried making Gohan the protagonist but it just didn't work out.
Take the timeline.
- Majin arc starts with Great Saiyaman, with Gohan as the main character
- Goku comes back for 24 hr, Vegeta dies as well
- Goku goes back to otherworld and talks to King Yemma, well after Vegeta's death, who doesn't understand why so many bodies are piling up.
- Gotenks vs Buu
- Gohan vs Buu
- AT realizes that he doesn't have an interesting way to end the fight and ditches Gohan
- Even though Yemma didn't know about Buu at the time of Vegeta's death, he actually did know and was holding onto his body
- AT has an interesting way to end the story.

Hes pacifist trash is why. And is the third worst fighter.
