Yes, it was 30 years ago, on Wednesday February 26, 1986, that the Anime adaptation of Dragon Ball debuted. It had been in the making for several months, after the Manga started getting popular with the 21st Tenka'ichi Budokai Arc.

The first episode was titled Bulma and Son Goku, and was based on the first Manga chapter of the same name. It was mostly identical to the original, but it introduced Emperor Pilaf and his gang, the villains of this Arc, a bit earlier; originally, they were introduced half-way through.

Ratings for the first night were really good (27.4% according to Kanzenshuu). From that moment on, the show was appointment viewing for kids all over japan, as they would tune in every Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. on Fuji TV for the next 11 1/2 years to see Goku and his friends in one action-packed adventure after another.

So Happy 30th Anniversary to the Dragon Ball Anime! Stay tuned for a separated but related thread I'll be making real soon.

Bump. Thought the anniversary was tomorrow (the 27th)? But either way, 30 years of DB!
Intrepidity. Courtesy. Illusions. Until the end. Until the end.
