These discussion forums/groups/rooms from when the anime/manga was being produced prove there was a good amount of people complaining over Goku being dropped as the main character and the handling of Gohan in the Boo saga.
(Note: "Dragonball ZZ" is what some people at the time referred the series as when Gohan became the main character)
(Note: Yes, that is how this person's message ends ...)
(Note: Also, since I can only have a maximum of 7 quote boxes in this post, I won't be putting these remaining sources in quote boxes)
Amazing ... Gohan out of top 20!! Maybe his new image is not that good as the old one ..."
Yeah, I preferred him when he was fighting Cell. It seems to me that he's gotten weaker. One thing I noticed that really bugged me was when he stopped the bank robbers, he turned Super Saiyan. Now, if little Goku can knock down a 500 lb. wrestler with a tap with his finger, what's a Super Saiyan's punch and kick supposed to do to a bank robber?!!!!"
In addition to all this, let's not forget how Gohan dropped in the Weekly Shonen Jump character popularity polls for the series during the Boo saga. In the poll that was taken during the end of the Cell Games, Gohan was voted to be the most popular character in the series. Fast forward to his fight with Super Boo, and he's out of the top 5 entirely.
Of course, none of this is solid proof that Toriyama chose to bring back Goku as the main character due to fan outcry, but this certainly does make that belief more plausible. And for the record, all Toriyama's ever said on this matter was that he felt Gohan wasn't suited to be the main character in comparison to Goku. He doesn't specify why, though, so his statements don't contradict the claim he brought back Goku as the main character due to fan outcry. For all we know, he could have meant that Gohan was unsuited to be the main character in comparison to Goku in terms of popularity.
Firstly, I understand this is Scotty.
That being said, as someone who was reading the Japanese manga as a teenager in 93. (the target audience) I can tell you that the overall feeling was that Gohan was a baddass in the Cell Saga. Some of my friends who are the same age as me are lifelong diehard Gohan fans because of the way the Cell Saga went down.
We were totally welcome to the idea of Gohan being the main character. Some people wanted Goku to be the main character for sure, but even those guys were open minded to the idea of Goku's son (the only person they were willing to) becoming the protagonist.
Toriyama failed at it. It's just that simple. Teenager Buu Saga Gohan sucked. Plain and simple. Because he sucked, fans wanted Goku back.
So the reality isn't that fans "Forced" Toriyama to make Goku the protagonist, Toriyama failed to convince us that Gohan could be, therefore resulting in fans wanting Goku back.
He tried, he failed. That's it.
OK, dude. I'm not disputing any of that.
My point is, there was a fan outcry over Gohan replacing Goku as the main character. According to Kanzenshuu;
Fan rumor though, has usually claimed that Toriyama was “forced” to give Gohan the shaft due to fan outcry and/or his ever-insidious editor. Once again there is not any real evidence of this.
But as I've proven with this topic, there was a fan outcry. In other words

This. It was the execution that was horrible. AT took the BA that tons of people loved and turned him into a nerdy doofus. Hell the fact that Cell saga gohan was so cool made it worse. I'm a lifelong gohan fan as well. When I saw how bad they butchered my favorite character, I hated adult gohan so much. Went from curbstoming cell to BEING A FRIGGIN MEMBER OF THE GINYU FORCE.

I win and you guys all know it.
As I see it, only the first 2 comments are actually fan outcry about Goku being replaced by Gohan. The other comments are about how terribly it was handled rather than the actual replacement. And terribly handled it indeed was: I mean, it was realistic (besides the super powers obviously), but it's not the right kind of realism people were looking for in a series about beings who could casually destroy entire planets if they wish to do so.
As I see it, only the first 2 comments are actually fan outcry about Goku being replaced by Gohan.
No, the seventh one is, too.
The other comments are about how terribly it was handled rather than the actual replacement.
They're still proof that Gohan became unpopular during the Boo saga, which made bringing Goku back more of a reasonable idea.
You guys realize who you're talkin' to right?

edward, you're just jealous that I've actually done something meaningful here. You just go around rambling about how you think the Pilaf saga was the high point of Dragon Ball all day.
I win this topic and the Internet.
