31. Review a game with a lead that's from a fictional species: Shantae: Half-Genie Hero
https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/vita/730862-shantae-half-genie-hero/reviews/169862

Are half-genies half-fictional or entirely fictional? *thinking face emoji*

I didn't really like this. This was probably the worst Shantae game. The game design was really sloppy and they crammed way too much stuff into this but didn't really think about how any of it would actually work in the game. It just wasn't all that fun, and it really feels like a game that was made on Kickstarter. Tepid recommendation if you love the Shantae games, but this really is the worst of the bunch.

Summary quote: There is just so much useless junk crammed in here that doesn’t make the game any better or any more interesting and it just feels like the developers were just throwing in every idea they could think of without considering if it would work with the game they were building around it. It feels like the fruitcake approach to game design, where you look at whatever is leftover on the kitchen counter and cram that all in to one monstrous desert that no one wants to eat. Time would’ve been better spent putting in a smaller amount of really well thought out core gameplay elements, and if they had built the game around one or two attacks and a handful of transformations, the experience would’ve been much better off for it.

I have 9/50 categories completed; I'll post a more definitive update later.

I've finished 11 games this year, but I can't really place two of 'em on the list without reeeally doing some shoehorning. I guess that kind of thing was inevitable.

I chuckled a bit at "Review a game released before 1990" -- I'm still playing games from the 70s. :)

A couple of questions......
  • What's the general accepted definition of "third person shooter"? Not trolling; I mostly play retro games where this wasn't a genre. The Wikipedia list includes stuff like Contra and Space Harrier, but I'd be inclined to call those a run and gun and rail shooter, respectively (plus I already reviewed those lulz). Do games like Ghost in the Shell, Oni, and Dirge of Cerberus unambiguously belong to this genre?? I own those.
  • How do I find out another user's favorite game?? Anyone wanna tell me theirs??
  • Also, what does "Review a game that you played with another person participating for some time" even mean??

A couple of questions......
  • Third person shooter most accurately refers to 3d shooters that aren't FPS, like Max Payne, Spec Ops, the ones you mentioned etc. But for the purpose of our little challenge that doesn't have a ton of genres, feel free to include shoot-em-ups and run-and-guns, as they are technically games where you shoot from the third person.
  • I think we listed some the first go round, but since then I've simply scanned through everyone's reviews to see what games they rated a perfect 10, as it should follow that any game rated so highly is a favorite. In your case, for instance, I would consider Super Mario Land 2 or Contra appropriate picks.
  • It means you played a multiplayer game with someone (not necessarily from GameFAQs). I assume the reason for the wording is to make you select a game you actually played with someone, rather than say, reviewing a multiplayer game like Battlefield 2 even though you only played against bots.

Yeah I agree with all of this! I'd say any game that someone else has reviewed as a 9 or 10 would be fine, but if you just want to go for perfect 10's that works too! And yeah, just as long as you play against or with another human player for some time, that's fine for the third one.
