Hmm. I'm sure the game would be enjoyable without having seen SU, but obviously better if you have. It takes place in the later seasons, so it definitely contains a bunch of spoilers if you ever did plan on watching it. (Which you should, because it's great.)

It's a very heart-warming children's cartoon about a boy being raised by three gem-themed magical women, with a good mix of light-hearted comedy and a serious story. It's central themes include love/relationships of all kinds (familial, self-love, abusive, etc.), recovering from trauma and queerness.
A lot of people have a hard time getting into the first dozen episodes or so (they are 11 minute episodes, so not as long as you'd think) because those episodes are very comedic, one-shots, and they find Steven to be very annoying. There is a plot though and Steven does grow up as the series goes on, so hang in there.
