I always freeze up when asked for my name and give my full name--because there might be a couple of Wills around, I dunno!--and then people look at me like I'm so self-important, acting like they need to know my last name. And then I am shamed.

Also, I once rented a room from a woman who had a ton of plants around, including two basil bushes. Since winter was coming on, there was no sense in keeping the basil alive, so my/her roommate and I left them out on the balcony and made a half-hearted bet out of which one would stay vital longer. I named mine something ridiculous like Roger Crandlewood and she named hers Basil, which I took to be bay-sill until I taunted her about her how Basil was looking pretty shabby and she had no idea what I was talking about. It was named bah-sil.

But here's the twist: Because roommate was (and I guess is) Canadian, she thought of the herb as being named bah-sil, because that's one of those weird Britishisms they embrace, like centre.
Willis, it seems like every other time you post, I need to look up a word that's in the OED or Urban Dictionary but not both.

Emphasizing the first syllable of "basil" will always make me think of Basil Fawlty.

Have you ever stopped to think and forgotten to start again?
