It still floors me how the stars could align to produce a game as good as OoT

Like, some games never found their footing in 3D, such as Sonic and Castlevania

Zelda got it right on the first try. Not just right, but a damn timeless masterpiece

I think a lot of first-time 3D games easily get too caught up with the fact that they are 3D, and don't put in the necessary work in other aspects of the game.

3D games rely on the same general gameplay mechanics as 2D games;
the world should be interesting to explore, the fighting/action elements should be flexible (in other words, you should be able to do several different kinds of attacks so that you aren't limited to just one attack all the time), the music should be captivating and the controls should be intuitive and easy to use.
OOT did all of those things right.
