Does anyone have the time to give me a rough estimate of the total number of dungeon type areas and the total number of town type areas on each of the first 9 Final Fantasy games?

Original versions (no extra GBA dungeons, etc.)

If you can't decide which category it goes in: if it has random enemy encounters for the majority of the game it is a dungeon not a town.

For instance: I believe FF1 has about 12 town type areas (castles, towns, friendly caves), and about 12 dungeon type areas. Maybe 1 or 2 more of each....

Again, just a rough estimate would be appreciated. No need for perfect answers.

(I posted this here because I think the FF8 board has some fairly hardcore fans compared to some of the other boards...)

............FF#_____01___02___03___04___05___06___07___08___09

.......Towns_____12___11___20___14___18___18___21___22___22

Dungeons_____12___13___22___17___23___17___13___11___14

So it appears 8 and 9 are tied for the most towns, and 5 has the most dungeons.

....and 2 has the least number of towns, and 8 has the least number of dungeons.

3 has the most total areas, possibly tied with 5 on a re-count

The point of this topic was knowledge for the sake of knowledge. Not comparing which is "better" or "worse" which of course are suggestive in most games.

Yeah I love all the first 9 Final Fantasy pretty much equally. I thought it would be interesting to analyze them more.

If anyone wants to double check the list or get more detail, I would like to add more specifics. If anyone would like to comment on or refine any of these definitions, please do.

I would count any area that has random battles as a "dungeon", not including world maps / overworlds. So even areas like the simulator area in the first FF8 town would count as a dungeon. Or inside the cave in Narshe on FF6.

I spent some time thinking about this next one, but I would count any "friendly" area a town. Even if it just has one, or maybe even no, people. Like Matoya's Cave on FF1 or even Gau's dad's house (or Duncan's Cabin) on FF6.

I suppose the alternative to that, or opposite, would be to only count an area as a Town if it has a shop or inn of some kind...

I also would say that any place that has more than one exit (or entrance) only counts as one town (or dungeon).... Perhaps even if it isn't connected on the inside (like the Dragon Caves on FF1).

Here is a site that has decent lists (they even include tiny locations like Duncan's Cabin). They categorize it differently for each page. For instance FF1 has Dungeons/Towns/ and Other. While their FF6 page just has them all as Locations.

I find it interesting that they basically all have about the same number of towns and dungeons.

All about plus or minus 5 from an average of 15 of each.

They seem to have found a magic "just right" number. You would think that at least one of them would have had way more...

Though maybe not more in the sense of total size (perhaps instead of 10 to 20 dungeons, have 50 smaller ones)....

Great now this has me thinking about the size of each of the dungeons in each game.

Yes I play FF 1 through 9 way too much.

Just one bump, I thought there were more FF nerds here like me!

Is there a general Final Fantasy board here at gamefaqs?
