More kills death penalty makes, the stronger it becomes. I believe you can overflow it for one hit kills, even for weapons.

The absolute minimum amount of kills needed by Vincent to cause damage overflow is 4608. This is with 255 Att, Lv 99 against the Bizarre Bug in its flying form (0 Def), causing a Back Attack, Critical and in Berserk, AND having used four Hero Drinks. Even with this setup, Vincent will only have a 4.3% chance (11/256); Vincent won't get a 100% chance of overflowing against the Bizzare Bug with said conditions until he gets 4992 kills.

It is also possible to get *too many* kills, thereby cancelling out the overflow's effect.

Iam afraid of a reset on any form like gil or exp. I hear underwater materia resets to 0 ap. Iam good if d penalty can hit around 9000

At what point is the reset? I'm sure, based off the technicals you just gave, that it would vary for each enemy. What would be the general range for the reset to occur?

I'm not looking at it right now, but I believe the kill count can't overflow. It is unsigned so the max kills is 65535. If Vinny has that many kills he stops accumulating power.

I believe DDJ is referring to double overflow where the overflow can overflow and return to positive numbers. This game is well made.

NFI is right, kill count cannot overflow; Vincent's kill count will cap at 65,535. Damage count, on the other hand, can, and it is important to note that when we are talking about damage overflow, there are two separate occasions in which it can occur. One at the Base Damage stage, and one at the Random Variation stage.

To calculate base damage, we multiply Damage Mod by Power Mod and then again by Def Mod

Damage Mod:

This is the result of the standard Physical Attack formula, which looks like this:

[ ([Level + Attack] / 32) * ([Level * Attack] / 32) ] + Attack

Assuming Lv 99, 255 Attack and using four Hero Drinks, the highest this value can be is 30,473

Power Mod:

By default, a player's default Physical Attack will have 16 Power. This indicates 1x damage. Seeing as the Power value can be modified via Ultimate Weapons (and Limit Breaks), we can use this as the variable to calculate the Power required to overflow against an enemy.

Def Mod:

This is basically (512 - Enemy's Def). So, an enemy with 0 Def will have a Def Mod of 512 (100% damage output). An Enemy with 256 Def would have a Def Mod of 256 (50% damage output).

So, to calculate base damage we go:

(Damage Mod * Power Mod * Def Mod) / 8192

This is our base damage calculated. Note that 16 * 512 = 8192; this means that if you were attacking an enemy with 0 Def with a Power value of 16, then the base damage calculated will simply be [Damage Mod].

Base Damage Overflow occurs when [Damage Mod * Power Mod * Def Mod] is greater than (2 ^ 31) - 1, which is 2,147,483,647.

In the case of an Enemy with 0 Def, the Power value required would need to be 138, and only Barret and Vincent can reach a Power value great enough to overflow at this stage.

Base Damage Overflow will cancel itself out if [Damage Mod * Power Mod * Def Mod] is greater than (2 ^ 32) - 1, which is 4,294,967,295. This occurs when the Power value reached 275 (Enemy with 0 Def).

Base Damage Overflow will occur once more if [Damage Mod * Power Mod * Def Mod] is greater than ((2 ^ 32) + (2 ^ 31)) - 1, which is 6,442,450,943. This occurs when Power is 413 or greater.

Vincent will have 10 Power with 0 - 127 Kills with the Death Penalty equipped and will gain +1 in Power once he has 128 kills. Every 128 kills he gets thereafter will increase his Power by +1, up to a maximum of 511 (65,408+ kills).

So, that's Base Damage Overflow out the way, if Overflow has not occurred at this stage it still has a chance to overflow following the Status Modifiers.

Random Variation Overflow

After the base damage has been calculated, various modifiers come into effect such as Critical, Split Damage, Frog etc. The three we are interested in are Critical, Berserk and Back Attack. Berserk will increase your damage output by 1.5x, and Critical/Back Attack will increase your damage by 2x. These effects stack to produce a maximum damage output of 6x damage, and all characters excluding Aeris can use Rnd Var overflow.

Note that you cannot cause Rnd Var overflow with just 2x damage; you will need 3x damage (Critical and Berserk or Back Attack and Berserk), 4x damage (Critical and Back Attack), or 6x damage (Critical, Back Attack and Berserk).

Once these modifiers have come into play, Rnd Var is considered, which looks like this:

Damage = [(Random number between 3841 ~ 4096) * Damage] / 4096

Again, if during this calculation the figure exceeds (2 ^ 31) - 1, the figure will overflow.
