Why did Cloud and the gang go to Gold Saucer in the first place? Was it because they thought they might find Sephiroth here?

Dyne is pretty well known in Corel Prison. How did Dyne escape the prison and massacre the people at the battle arena?

Why did shinra burn down Barret’s hometown. The townspeople are still in the area presently, so obviously they dont care if theyre in the location, so what was there to gain?

Following Barret. And just for the sake of taking the player on a grand tour of the world.

Dyne is pretty well known in Corel Prison. How did Dyne escape the prison and massacre the people at the battle arena?

By taking the elevator, presumably. It's not a real or particularly tight prison, just a craphole that people are dumped into with one poor Gold Saucer official controlling the elevator out. Dyne was not a prisoner, he was the last remaining resident of that town, and as a psycho with a gunarm everyone there tended to listen to him.

Why did shinra burn down Barret’s hometown. The townspeople are still in the area presently, so obviously they dont care if theyre in the location, so what was there to gain?

What's there to lose? Shinra wanted to keep the people in line.

I actually had this theory a while back, in regards to Shinra’s motivation and actions.

One thing I was off about, noted by Vir in that topic, is that Shinra regularly built reactors for numerous places. Poor maintenance abound, but they had an interest in the profits of course, so it’s not too suspicious of them to build it for a remote town. But the rest, I think could be possible.

1 - Cloud and Co. went to Golden Saucer in search of Sephiroth. That is stated in the story. The fact that such gave Barret an opportunity to settle his past with Dyne (who he wasn't even aware that was alive) was mere coincidence.

2 - Dyne isn't a prisoner, he is the manager of the prison. That is also referred in the story, by Mr. Coates, who calls Dyne "Boss". Hence, it is expected for him to have free pass around.

3 - Shinra blamed Corel's townspeople for the accident in the reactor, and burned down the down as a way to punish them. That is also stated in the story.

They were actually following the trail of clones rather than Sephiroth through that part, with the NPC comments leading them to the ropeway. They don't make a big deal out of it through, it's mostly left to optional dialogue, leaving it as Barret's storytime.

Dyne's story is pretty murky there, and obviously pretty contrived. He is the "boss" of the prison who decided the exact moment you were at Gold Saucer that he wanted to go up and murder a room full of people before going back down.

Probably the worst of FFVII's subplots, and Barret's character is one of the more problematic ones even though I love him dearly.

I don't see the issue there, and it's easy to infer the circumstances that led to the plot. He has a grudge agains't Barret, as the latter supported the reactor that the former shunned, and became the boss of the prison after the accident that led them both to lose one of their arms. It's easy to imagine that, as the boss, he managed to get info that Barret was once again in the town. Also, he was already pretty nuts as he himself admitted, so it is also easy to imagine he plotting something crazy as shooting people in order to get Barret down in the prison.

Yeah, but that doesn't bear out in the scene we see at all. Dyne states he wants to kill everything. He says he hates Barret, but he wasn't out to find Barret out of respect for his dead wife. He comes to the conclusion they have to fight when he learns Marlene is alive.

Even ignoring motivation, Dyne isn't shown as calculating. The plan also wouldn't make sense. Was it planned for Cloud to get framed at Battle Square? Barret was already down there. Did he go willingly? Did Barret see Battle Square and just know Dyne did it? How do you time coming up an elevator and butchering a room full of people in an amusement park so that one person sees it before anyone else and gets framed?

I tend to agree with TomorrowDog, they could have written it so that Dyne discovered Barret had come home and organized their meeting, but it really doesn't come across that way in the game. It's a contrived coincidence to keep the story going, they're often a necessity but they can be disguised a whole lot better than that.
