I don't know where to start. I have a PS1 so what Final Fantasy game should I play? Part 7? What about 8?

The stories in a lot of the FF games are really disconnected, so feel free to start with whichever game you want. VII was the first for a lot of people (myself included).

Why are there separate discs

Why are there separate discs

Because the game was too big to be held on one disc. This phenomenon happened with the other PS1 FF games, and some other titles on the console as well.

Once you get partway through the game, you'll switch discs; you begin on Disc 1. By the end, you'll be on Disc 3.

All of the PS1 FF were great, tbh. 7 is dark and futuristic, 8 is a love story in a very unique world, and 9 is a fairy tale in a medieval setting (in the end is sci-fi, but i won't spoil it)

Yeah each has its own style.

7:

-setting is like industrial decay juxtaposed with vivid nature

-blank slate characters with deep customization for magic/skills, streamlined system

-environmental themes

8:

-setting is a grounded world with a lot of modern traits, blended with gothic fantasy style and futuristic sci-fi (a more clean, ideal sci-fi compared to FF7’s darker dirtier take)

-blank slate characters with deep customization, a lot more micromanaging and adjusting than the quicker style in 7

-story has more romance and some very outlandish twists here and there

9:

-world is very much like a Germanic fairy tale, walking between outright dreamy lofty fantastical things and horrific undertones

-gameplay is more based on the characters being fixed classes. You get to learn and set abilities but your black mage character is a black mage, your summoners/white mages are summoners/white mages, your lancer is a lancer, knight is a knight, etc.

-story more about existential crises and actually does well dealing with depression, walks a jarring line between this dreamy storybook world and horrible tragedy.

VII is def a fine entry point. VIII is hit or miss with most people (I enjoy it, tho). IX is like a Greatest Hits of FF.

If you’re strictly looking at PS1, then yeah, VII. If you’re looking at any of them, VII is still super high, but X is very beginner friendly and then, of course, there’s VI on SNES which is the best game ever to me.

So what's Final Fantasy 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6?

They're all separate games. In other words, 2 is not a sequel to one, 5 is not a prequel to 6, and so on.

It's kind of like Mario. A lot of interconnected mechanics, the occasional callback, but no real ties to each other.

They are different games with different stories aswell. The first three were released for the NES between 1987 and 1990, the stories are simpler than in future entries of the series and the battles are really difficult.
Final Fantasy I is the game that started the franchise and Final Fantasy III is brilliant, the game that introduced the job system.

Final Fantasy 4 to 6 were released for the SNES between 1991 and 1994, they are more plot driven while still a challenge for the player. My favourite entry is 5, it mixes a funny story with a great job system and some difficult battles, but 4 is a favourite in Japan and 6 in US.
