For better or worse, a Board FAQ to answer several commonly asked questions, including about some things not found in FAQs, such as Overflow.

And people, please. The FAQs and Walkthroughs are right at your fingertips. It's no trouble at all to check them. Fortunately for you this isn't 1997 (when you had to call a Hotline for a buck per minute to get some game info).

Table of Contents:

0. Will there be a remake of Final Fantasy 7?
Answer: No. There won't be. Or to make this clear, Square-Enix has said that it would take about 300 people and 5 years (or so) to create a remake, and that they weren't interested in doing it. Petitions generally don't work. It's likely not going to happen, at least not within the next decade. Perhaps when we hit 2077, who knows. Classics often don't really need a remake, in my opinion.

4. What is Overflow?

1. Several frequently asked minor questions.
1.11. What is the best training spot in the game?
It's the swamp area in the Northern Crater. You can go here only on Disc 3. You know where your party splits up for the first time? You go down, then take the lower right path again. It looks like a swamp area. You can encounter Magic Pots here, which will give you 8000 Exp, 1000 AP, and 8500 Gold for each Magic Pot. You will encounter these Magic Pots about 40% of the time. You can also encounter Movers (who will always come in pairs of 3). These little bouncing orbs give no Exp, but they do give 800 AP, and 30000 Gold each (which adds up to 2400 AP and 90000 Gold for a 'Mover' battle). Movers are a much rarer encounter, at only 6.25% of the time. So that's the best training area of the game.
Trying to get 1 woman will get you nothing, trying to get 10 women will get you 10.

1.12. How can I max my stats?
You can do this at the sunken Gelnika plane, which crashed and now resides at the bottom of the sea. Use the Submarine to locate it. In there, you can fight several creepy and rather strong creatures that can all be morphed into a stat source. However, this isn't the only place to max your stats.

Strength: (Power Source)
------------------------
- Morph Heavy Tank (Broken Gongaga Reactor)
- Morph Screamer (Mount Nibel)
- Unknown (Sunken Gelnika)

Vitality: (Guard Source)
------------------------
- Morph Bagnadrana (Mount Corel)
- Morph Spiral (Mideel Dirt Areas)
- Morph Unknown 2 (Sunken Gelnika)
- Morph Maximum Kimaira (Midgar Raid Disc2, Special Battle Fight #7)
- Morph Armored Golem (Crater)

Magic: (Magic Source)
---------------------
- Morph 8 eye (Temple of the Ancients, Battle Square)
- Morph Unknown 3 (Sunken Gelnika, Special Battle Fight #3)

Spirit: (Mind Source)
---------------------
- Morph Dragon Rider (Whirlwind Maze)
- Morph Killbin (Whirlwind Maze)
- Morph Serpent (Sunken Gelnika, Battle Square, Special Battle Fight #4)

Dexterity: (Speed Source)
-------------------------
- Morph Poodler (Sunken Gelnika)

Luck: (Luck Source)
-------------------
- Morph Bad Rap (Sunken Gelnika)

Note:
Maxing stats is fairly easy (with sources). There's only one thing to be
aware of: Stat boosting equipment. If you wear something that boosts a
stat, you can't boost that stat higher than 255, BUT it will not be the max for
that character. Say you have a weapon equipped that increases Magic +10, you
can only boost the Magic stat to 255 .. but when you remove the weapon (or
rather, equip an other weapon, since you can't remove weapons), the magic stat
will be only 245 (or higher, depending on the boost the other weapon gives).
Many people don't realize Weapons can boost other stats too, mainly Magic. To
reach max stats, unequip any accessory, equip an armor that doesn't boost any
stats (there's plenty of those armors), and equip a weapon that doesn't boost
any stats, IF POSSIBLE. Otherwise, equip the weapon that has the smallest stat
boost. Here's a quick list of what to equip when boosting stats to the 255 max:

For Cloud, equip the Nail Bat.
For Barret equip the Gatling Gun, Drill Arm, Rocket Punch or Pile Banger.
For Tifa equip the Leather Glove, Work Glove, or Master Fist.
For Aeris (doesn't really matter), combination Guard Stick/Mythril Rod.
For RedXIII equip the Magic Comb.
For Yuffie equip the 4-point Shuriken.
For Cait Sith equip the Battle Trumpet.
For Vincent equip the Silver Rifle.
For Cid, equip the Mop.

Effective Method:
-----------------
For obvious reasons, always use Yuffie with her Conformer. This allows high
damage when morphing. Max her Strength out first so morphing becomes easier.
Speaking of Strength, go to Gongaga for that and have fun with Heavy Tanks.
For Dexterity and Luck, go to the Sunken Gelnika and into the Hallway where you
also (possibly) fought the Turks in. The creatures here come in groups and all
morph into Speed/Luck Sources. As for Vitality, head to Mideel and morph Spiral
creatures on the dirt areas. They also come in groups, so that speed things up.

The two remaining stats, Magic and Spirit, are possibly the hardest to max out.
The best way to do this is to do the Special Battle in the Battle Square, and
only proceed up to the 4th battle all the time. Yes.. because by then you'll
have morphed both the Unknown 3 and Serpent in a Magic/Mind Source. It doesn't
even take THAT long, but it certainly helps if Cloud has max Strength. During
this method, you may also want to morph the Ho-chu's from Fight #2 into Ribbons
to get 99 of those as well.

Trying to get 1 woman will get you nothing, trying to get 10 women will get you 10.

1.13. And how can I max HP and MP?
Equip a HP Plus or MP Plus Materia. Or, if you mean to max your natural HP/MP, then you will need to reset your game alot of times. Best is to take a look at the Party Mechanics Appendix, or my FAQ's section devoted to it. You need to be below the following levels to be safe for the maxing process:

Cloud Max Safety Lvl: 77 (HP), 62 (MP), 62 (Both)
Barret Max Safety Lvl: 77 (HP), 51 (MP), 51 (Both)
Tifa Max Safety Lvl: 77 (HP), 51 (MP), 51 (Both)
Aeris Max Safety Lvl: 78 (HP), 50 (MP), 50 (Both)
Red XIII Max Safety Lvl: 60 (HP), 43 (MP), 43 (Both)
Yuffie Max Safety Lvl: 78 (HP), 51 (MP), 51 (Both)
Cait Sith Max Safety Lvl: 72 (HP), 51 (MP), 51 (Both)
Vincent Max Safety Lvl: 39 (HP), 69 (MP), 39 (Both)
Cid Max Safety Lvl: 45 (HP), 51 (MP), 45 (Both)

1.21 + 1.22. How can I get Elixirs for the Magic Pots?
Yeah, you can not hurt Magic Pots without feeding them an Elixir first, so you'll need alot if you want to train there. You could just abuse the W-item trick. This requires you to have the W-item materia (gotten at the end of the winding tunnel during the Midgar Raid at the end of Disc 2, or you can dig it up at Bone Village if you missed it. Dig at the 'X' marked in the sand, otherwise known as 'Spot 4' on the picture map; www.shillatime.org/bonevillage0000.jpg
When you have the W-item materia, select the item you want to duplicate and press circle and use it. Then go to any other usable item, say potion, and press circle once, but don't use it, and press X instead. Now press circle, x, circle, x, and you'll keep duplicating the first item (Elixir in this case).
If you don't feel like 'cheating', you can also steal Elixirs from Master Tonberries and Gighees who also appear in the same area as the Magic Pots.

1.3. Can I, and how do I exit the Crater?
Yes, you can exit the crater, and it's pretty easy, too. Just don't go past the point of no return, which is when the team meets up at the bottom when you also receive items, and you're given the choice to 'let's mosey'. Backtrack through the crater, climbing rocks whenever you need to. When you get to the first screen of the crater where you've gotten the Save Crystal from a treasure chest, just go in the opening that looks like a cave. From there, just walk up all the way to the Highwind and continue your unfinished adventures.

1.4. Ruby WEAPON doesn't appear. What's wrong?
Here's what makes Ruby WEAPON appear in the Gold Saucer Desert on the World Map: First of all, defeat Ultimate WEAPON. This can be done after you have defeated Diamond WEAPON at the near end of Disc 2. Once you've defeated Ultimate WEAPON, go fight one random battle, and enter a town or something. Go back to the World Map and fly to the Gold Saucer Desert. Ruby WEAPON should show up, and it looks like a little red 'dude' walking around the desert. Don't be fooled, it can eradicate you if you're not prepared.

Trying to get 1 woman will get you nothing, trying to get 10 women will get you 10.

1.5. Ultimate WEAPON dissapeared on me. Where's it gone to?
When you're chasing Ultimate WEAPON around the World Map, it will not go to one of his 'healing' locations right away. His healing locations are the locations where he will stop and float while loading up with a blueish light. This does not heal his HP whatsoever. His HP is 100000, and this starts decreasing from the moment you first hit him in the mandatory battle in Mideel up until you kill him above Cosmo Canyon. Once his HP goes below 20000 he will fly over directly to Cosmo Canyon. That will be the last battle.

The following chart may be of use to determine where Ultimate WEAPON may have went after you've chased him around. Please note, Ultimate WEAPON will never go to these places out of itself. You must bump into him several times with the Highwind. 4 times often seems to be the key number until he will move to a 'healing location'.
Location.......................Battle Type....Item to steal:

Mideel (Mandatory).....Ground.........Cursed Ring
Junon Area (At lake)...Aerial.............Circlet
Mideel............................Aerial.............Circlet
Mt. Nibel........................Aerial.............Circlet
North Corel...................Aerial............Circlet
Gongaga Village.........Ground..........Reflect Ring
Fort Condor.................Ground...........Reflect Ring
Midgar City...................Ground..........Reflect Ring
Northern Crater...........Ground..........Reflect Ring
Cosmo Area (Final)....Aerial..............Nothing (Win Ultimate Weapon 100%)

1.6. I can't learn a certain Limit Break, why?
There can be several different reasons for this. First of all, all level 4 Limits are learned through the use of Limit Break manuals. These are items. You must have learned ALL other learnable Limit Breaks before a character can learn the L4 Limit Break.

If it's not the L4 Limit Break you can't learn, but a 1.1 (example: Cross Slash) or 2.0 (example: Blade Beam) or 2.1 for example, then it may be because you haven't killed enough enemies yet, or haven't used the first Limit Break enough. It may also be that you are suffering from a glitch that causes the game to not learn that Limit break, but this is a rare occurence.

An example for learning Limit Breaks: If you want to learn Cross Slash, you will need to use Braver about 8 times. If you want to learn Blade Beam, the first level 2 Limit Break, you will need to kill about 115 enemies with Cloud.

If you can't learn Red XIII's L4 Limit Break, even when you've learned all Limit Breaks, try setting it to Level 3. After this, you can learn the L4 Limit. This may help for other characters too.
Trying to get 1 woman will get you nothing, trying to get 10 women will get you 10.

1.7. I can't learn this particular Enemy Skill. Why not?
Are you talking about a skill that the enemy won't cast on you because it's naturally good (like White Wind, which heals), then you must Manipulate that particular enemy and cast it on your self.

If not, you're probably either talking about Pandora's Box, Trine, ????, Roulette, or Chocobuckle. This should help you understand how to get them:

-If you want Trine on all FOUR Enemy Skill Materia's, make sure you don't kill
Godo before getting the Highwind. You can, however, still do everything else in
Wutai, just don't do the Godo Boss Battle.

- Pandora's Box is only used by the first Dragon Zombie you'll meet, as a Final
Attack when it's killed off. After this, something in the game causes them to
never perform this attack again. So, if you want the skill on all four Materia,
learn them all at once, or you will never be able to again.

- Jersey will never cast ???? if you've already attacked it once (with physical
attacks). This is a bug, so when you get into a battle with them don't attack
them and wait for them to cast ????. And even that may take a while.

- Chocobuckle can be learned from all Chocobo's, but the easiest way is to find
some that have a level divisible by 4, so you can cast L4 Suicide on it (after
feeding it a Mimett Green). Around the Chocobo Farm are Chocobo's with a level
that's divisible by 4. Feeding the Chocobo a Sylkis Green also works, btw.

- Death Dealer will only cast Roulette when it's HP is under 25% of it's max HP,
and use it as a counter attack against you. They have 7000 Max HP, so their HP
must be below 1750. Attack it, don't kill it with the attack, and it'll cast
Roulette. They can only do this once in a battle.

In addition, the following information will prove useful while being on the Enemy Skill subject:

Locations of the four Enemy Skill Materia's:
---------------------------------------------
1) Found on the spot you fought the H0512 Boss, in Shinra Building.
2) Found in the Beginner's Hall in Junon.
3) City of the Ancients; Behind the uppermost bed in the room you took a nap.
4) Gotten by talking to the Green Chocobo at the Chocobo Sage's House.

Learning Enemy Skills:
----------------------------------------------
You can NOT learn Enemy Skills when you run away from a battle or get kicked
out of battle. You can also NOT learn any skill in the Battle Square, and you
can also NOT learn a skill by having characters cast it on each other.

1.8. I heard Bizarro and Safer Sephiroth their HP are not fixed amounts. What's up?
You heard correct:

Bizarro Sephiroth's HP
Main Body's Max HP = 40000 + 5000 * No. of Characters at L99
+ 60000 if Knights of Round was used on Jenova*SYNTHESIS
Head's Max HP = 2000 + 250 * No. of Characters at L99
Core's Max HP = 10000 + 1250 * No. of Characters at L99
Right Mgc's Max HP = 4000 + 500 * No. of Characters at L99
Left Mgc's Max HP = 4000 + 500 * No. of Characters at L99

Safer Sephiroth's HP/stats
80,000 Base HP
+30,000 Max HP, 2 Att, 20 Def, 5 MAt, 16 MDf per character at L99
+80,000 Max HP if you cast Knights of Round on Jenova*SYNTHESIS

Minus 100 Current HP for every time you killed Bizarro Sephiroth's Head.

Safer Sephiroth's MP can NOT be depleted.

At maximum power, Safer*Sephiroth will have:
400,000 Max HP, 246 Att, 260 Def, 140 MAt, 308 MDf
Trying to get 1 woman will get you nothing, trying to get 10 women will get you 10.

1.10. What is the MDef bug?
The MDef that armor should give, is not used. In other words, ignore the number that it shows at MDef for armor. Characters still have Magic Defense, but this is solely based on the stat Spirit. Characters also have MDef%, which is Magic Evasion. This is how often a character dodges a magical attack, and this stat does work on armor. It doesn't affect normal MDef.

1.11. How do I score 5000+ points in the Speed Square?

In the PC version, you can hit the Yellow Zeppelin's propellor for 5000+ points in one go. This even goes up to 25000 points. But, it's PC version only.

In all other versions, my advise is to play the game often and memorize the locations of the targets so you can have the cursor there when they pop up.

These 3 hidden targets may also help you. You should also shoot the large UFO to pieces or it'll be almost too hard for real.

- The Yellow Boulder can be shot at two occasions. The first occasion is when
you're still in the cactus section, and this is often by pure luck. It's on the
Canyon top. The second occasion is when you are turning around and a single
blue plane pops up after a while. Just before that happens, check the back of
the top of the canyon and shoot the boulder. I suggest shooting it on the 2nd
occasion, as you don't have any other targets to hit during that time. (200 points)

- The Red Wheel of the Boat appears after the Yellow Submarines. The longer you
shoot this, the more points you get. Hold your laser to receive the most
points. You can NOT get infinite points with this, UNLESS you have the Japanese
Version. It wasn't fixed in that version, so it kept giving points. (points vary)

- The Secret Headlight is the 2nd last that appears on the left side of the trail
right before the coaster ends. You just have to try this one out a couple of
times until you get it right. (200 points)

1.12. Can you clarify the love relations of the game a bit?
Sure I can:

Aeris loves Zack. Aeris loves Cloud.
Tifa loves Cloud. Cloud loves both, but here's where it comes down to interpretation.
Ask the writer of the story and he will likely say Tifa.

1.13. What are the voices in Clouds head?
It's in fact Cloud's real self that talks to him. This real self will also sometimes show itself to Cloud, sometimes as Cloud when he was a kid.
Trying to get 1 woman will get you nothing, trying to get 10 women will get you 10.

1.14. What are all mandatory inns/healings?
Often challenge specific related, but useful and interesting nonetheless.

From GarlandG:

1. Cloud is healed after you escape Reactor No.1
2. The party is healed in the 7th Heaven Bar
3. Cloud is healed after he falls in the Church
4. The party is healed once Aeris reaches the top floor of the Church
5. The party is healed at Aeris's House
6. Cloud is healed on the way to Wall Market ( just after chitchatting with Aeris)
7. The party is healed as soon as you reach the bottom of the Pillar
8. Cloud is healed after the fight with Reno
9. The party is healed on Floor 67 in the Shinra HQ
10. The party is healed as soon as you have confirmed the death of President Shinra on Floor 70
11. The party is healed before Motor Ball
12. The party is healed as soon as you reach the World Map ( or was it just before when you have to split up?? I can't remember)
13. The party is healed after the Flashback in Kalm
14. The party is healed in Junon after defeating Bottomswell
15. Cloud is healed as soon as you enter Gold Saucer
16. Barret is healed when he fights Dyne
17. The party is healed after you defeat Gi Nattack
18. The party is healed in Gold Saucer, just before heading to the Temple of the Ancients
19. The party is healed in Gongoga, after the Temple of the Ancients
20. The party is healed when you have dug for the "Lunar Harp"
21. The party is healed in the Forgotten City ( you have to sleep to get the Big Fish out of the way, I always found that a bit illogical but oh well....)
22. The party is healed once you get to control Barret at the Execution
23. The party is healed once you re-enter Midgar
24. The party is healed after Hojo, at the end of Disc2.

1.15. What are the date scenes that you can get in the Gold Saucer?

Admittedly, these are links. But these are videos of the date scenes:

Aeris: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l6fvjZrYYwU
Tifa: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Skm5p3r-JcA
Yuffie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_1MO-R5mPC0
Barret: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D30JDkDHWZk

1.16. Why can't I feed my Chocobo's?

Set the controls back to default. Other controls can sometimes mess the game up, for example during Chocobo feeding, or climbing the ladder in Bone Village.
Trying to get 1 woman will get you nothing, trying to get 10 women will get you 10.

2. FAQs concerning Items and such
2.1. How can I get these elusive Vagyrisk Claws?
There are 2 methods.

1) Lose one of the first 3 Fort Condor battles and beat the CMD Grand Horn. You will win a Vagyrisk Claw from him. Losing a Fort Condor battle means losing the prize that you could've gotten normally by winning the battle, though.

2) Steal from Bagrisks:
They can be found on the DIRT area on the world map, in the Cosmo
Area, BUT not anywhere in the canyon dirt (so anywhere with an amber/orange
glow is excluded). Where can one find such a dirt area? From Cosmo Canyon, head
west all the way until you find a small part that's far away enough to qualify.
These little green-skinned, yellow eyed reptiles are the only creatures you can
steal a Vagyrisk Claw from. Stealing it isn't easy though. As a matter of fact,
your chances will never be any higher than 4.23% chance of stealing a Vagyrisk
Claw, and this is at character level 11. You'll steal Softs most of the time.
The mechanics behind all of this can be found in the Enemy Mechanics FAQ,
written by Terence. Also note that L77 is the last level you can steal
Vagyrisk Claws at. L78+ won't allow it, and for those planning the future
ahead, the Steal Glove will also nullify your chances. Steal with your lowest
leveled character, and hope for the best.

2.2. What are all locations of the Ribbons?
The locations of all Ribbons in game are as follows:

1. Temple of the Ancients (found, Room V, can be forever missed).
2. Inside Gaea's cliff, hidden room (found, can be forever missed).
Description of location: When you first enter the caves, then, in the icy cave,
head north to the next area. Here, go left, then south to the previous area,
except you're on the upper level now. Head right over the ice bridge, and walk
further to the right through the wall, to reach a secret room holding a Ribbon.

3. After winning the special battle at the Gold Saucer 10 times.
4. Morph Ho-chu at the special battle, fight 2, at the Gold Saucer. This is the easiest method, since they only have 8600 HP.
5. Morph Master Tonberry at the Northern Crater, swamp area. They have 44444 HP, which is a lot.

2.3. What is the use of items like 1/35 Soldier?
1/35 Soldier does nothing, it's just a collecters item. So is the Masamune Blade, by the way, which you can win from the Speed Square. This
is only an item, a replica of the Masamune, as the description tells you. The real masamune is only seen in the Kalm Flashback, equipped by Sephiroth.

Tissues have no other use, but it has been mentioned Cloud could possibly use them after spending a night with Tifa..
And no, they don't make the battle square harder or easier.
Trying to get 1 woman will get you nothing, trying to get 10 women will get you 10.

3. Making Gold and GP. Fast.
3.1. How to make gold fast.

1) Early in game.
You can get an Ether dropped by Mono Drives (small floating robots, found in the first reactor and Train Graveyard [first time when getting off the train, head right]).
You can also steal Ethers from various creatures, for example Deenglows, again at the Train Graveyard when you get there for the final time. Ethers can be sold for a whopping
of 750 gil. This is alot at the start of the game.

2) First Disc, late half, and later.
You can battle creatures in the Junon hallway, but that's not the best way. They give decent AP though, so you can attempt to master an All Materia (by placing it into a Double
Growth Weapon), and then sell it for 1.4 mil gold when you've mastered it.

3) Disc 3
Not the fastest method, but effective anyway. Buy a Sylkis Green from the Chocobo Sage, and duplicate 99 of it.
Sell them for a decent sum of gold.

3.2. How to make GP fast.
You can buy GP from the 'GP-dude'.

He appears ONLY AFTER GETTING THE HIGHWIND, and you have about 15% chance of
seeing him, or in other words every 1 out of 7 times or so. You can just walk
in the Gold Saucer and out to see if he's there. Where exactly is he hiding?
He's north from the save point, hiding a bit behind the house. A screenshot can
be found here (thanks to shadow666):
http://www.shillatime.org/gpdude.jpg

The GP-Dude sells 1 GP for 100 gil, up to a max of 100 GP for 10000 gil. Fair
enough. This is the max GP each time you see him; Then he will vanish from the
screen. You will need to walk in and out again to make him re-appear. This can
be done infinitely.

An other very effective method is to just become decent at Chocobo Racing.
Many items can be exchanged for like 300+ GP.
Trying to get 1 woman will get you nothing, trying to get 10 women will get you 10.

4. What is Overflow?

Terence, a well respected veteran and game hacker, provided us with the following info after a movie was placed on Youtube showing Emerald Weapon was killed by Vincent in one blow:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
First off, once you hit 65535 kills, it doesn't increase anymore. There's no overflow *there*.

You don't need to do 22 million damage to cause an overflow. There are two main dangers where overflow can occur. The first is right at the start where your Base Damage is applied to both the Power of the attack and the enemy's Defense. If this damage goes above 262,144 damage, an overflow will occur. ('Check 1')

The second danger occurs right when Random Variance is worked out which is after all the things like Berserk, Frog, Critical Hits and the like have been added. If the damage before Random Variance goes above a random value from 524288 to 559094, the damage will overflow. ('Check 2')

If the damage overflows (and assuming that it doesn't overflow by enough to go back into positive numbers again - that *can* happen with low enough Defense and high enough Power/Hero Drinks), the damage will be negative.

Negative damage is not the same as positive healing. Negative damage makes FF7 think: "Oh, you did so much damage that his HP overflowed and he now has more HP than before the attack. I'd better fix that." Instant death.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Overflow can not be done to Ruby Weapon, because it's defense is too high.

Overflow can be done on Emerald WEAPON, and it can be done with both the Death Penalty and the Missing Score.
Just feed the character 4 Hero Drinks, and have the use Deathblow or a Critical Strike while their weapons are buffed up.
Kill like 15k enemies with the Death Penalty, or put like 2 million AP in the Missing Score, this will do the trick.
Alternatively you can also Berserk them.

Closing words:
I hope this sheds some light on often asked questions. Anything else, such as getting the Ultimate Weapons or Level 4 Limit Breaks, can be looked up in the FAQs.

And admittedly this isn't a commonly asked question, but if you want to know where you can find some neat official artwork, look here:

Trying to get 1 woman will get you nothing, trying to get 10 women will get you 10.
