I'm ready to fight the Dragonlord, though I need to level up a little more I think since I'm level 18.

It's been very fun, grinding has never been more fun to me in a video game than in DQ and I'm honestly not sure why. I went ahead and got DQII in preparation since I'll probably be done by tomorrow. Would you suggest I keep going in a linear order? I don't want DQXI to spoil me from a luxury perspective or anything, and I know it's long, so I'm thinking I should knock them out in order.

not long at all. My Switch playtime tracker says "over 5 hours" but a couple of those weren't particularly productive on my part, having resets over dying in certain places and lots of aimless fighting rather than focused grinding. There's really only like three objectives in the entirety of DQI

Play 1, 2 and 3 before 11. The rest you can play in pretty much any order.

1,2 and 3 have very little to do with XI tbf.

The first DQ can easily be beat over a weekend. Randomizer runs tend to last about 90 minutes, but that’s a little different.

There's a lot especially in dq3 that will help you appreciate XI more tho. Especially the true ending since it calls back to lore from 1 and 3 especially.

7-12 hours I'd say if you've never played it before.

That’s not really true. Major end of the game spoilers At the end of XI the Luminary is granted the title of Erdrick and it is shown that he is the first in a line of legendary heroes to bear the title. It’s then revealed that the Sword of Light is the same Sword of Kings that eventually makes its way into the Dragon Quest III hero’s hands as it’s passed down from hero to hero across the ages. The game is called Echoes of an Elusive Age not because the Luminary’s journey echoes Erdwin’s but because the Luminary’s journey echoes across time throughout the series lore. The final scene of the game is literally the opening scene of Dragon Quest III. All of this will go over the players head if they haven’t played the Erdrick trilogy.
