I'd say Super Mario 64.
Super Mario 64 is the best game of all time and is the Melee of Super Mario.

I will always love SM64 the most but SMO is on par, if not better.

There are select bits from each I really enjoy.

Mechanically I prefer Odyssey.

Platforming wise, I prefer the FLUDD-less sections of Sunshine (Edit: I also enjoy a fair bit of FLUDD parts actually).

As a collect-a-thon I prefer 64.

The running, jumping, cappy moves, cappy possesions, camera angles etc etc It very much feels a polished experience and Mario feels good to control.

I see. I just feel Sunshine and especially 64 have more freedom in mechanics and momentum...

but I can see why Odyssey can be preferred.

Might need you to give some examples there, Mario in Odyssey can do everything he can in 64 (minus long jump, but the cappy jump can be used as a good replacement) and more (and discounting FLUDD, similar story for Sunshine).

Unless you're referring to the level design within which those mechanics operate? In which case, that would come under what I mean with platforming.

64. To me, it feels likethe perfect balance between freedom and linearity, with how the game almost never prvents you from obtaining other stars instead of only the one you picked.

Sunshine has arguably the best controls of any 3D Mario, and i absolutely loved using FLUDD to navigate around the worlds. In addition, the game stands out a lot from the other Mario games, in terms of graphical and sound design. The game is dragged down by a couple of issues however, such as the blue coin hunt and some of the secret levels.

Odyssey feels like a natural evolution of the formula, and Cappy’s abilities were very fun to use. But i felt that the amount of power moons Nitnendo added were too many, and plenty of them felt like they were only there as filler content.

I like the Mario 64 style. I feel like Odyssey was a great follow up on that, but the levels felt too confined. With a couple exceptions the levels all felt far too small.
