Why is 480p an output option?

Curious as to why. Why is it an option since every HD TV can accept 720p and higher? Only other display I can think of is HD CRT but those can handle higher resolutions anyway. Also lower resolution should impact performance so more stable frame rate with 480p?

This is for docked mode. You can't change the resolution in handheld.

Probably to meet hdmi spec.
Sadly, afaik changing output resolution does not improve performance. Games are still internally rendered at the same resolution.

So old SD games, everything from gen one to gen six, can display correctly? (I don't know, I'm just guessing).

True it only makes the tv do more upscaling.
