Sony just confirmed PS5 will probably come out between 2020 and 2021. That gives Nintendo two or three more tranquil years with the Switch and enough time to make a console that won’t stay so far behind next gen’s hardware.
This next gen will be the first time Nintendo makes a console that has nothing to do with Iwata’s plans. They can launch something that has a thinner gap with Sony and Microsoft and get less watered down versions of multiplats or late ports.

Who thinks they will manage? Who thinks they will waste the opportunity?

Kimishima said the Switch isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. And besides they’re not really competing with that market much anyway

I don't think Nintendo will chase power for their next console. They'll likely do something weird, kind of like they've been doing since the Wii.

PS5 should probably wait till mid-20s and beef up its performance, until then PS4 Pro would be just enough. The gap between the 7th and 8th generation of consoles was already so small it was underwhelming. There were barely any games this gen where you could honestly say "yes, this would be impossible on PS3 or X360 and this game completely justifies the upgrade". If they rush to jump on the 9th generation there will probably be no such games at all on PS5 and X2 and you'd be hard pressed to tell whether a game is 8th or 9th gen just by looking at pictures.
Everything will be fire.

Nintendo detailed quite some time ago that they're not trying to compete directly with Sony with Switch. Your "point" is pretty much invalid. Sorry.

It's impossible for Nintendo to even come close for as long as the Switch has to be portable

The only way for the Switch 2 to go for power is by the dock itself having additional hardware, but then the performance gap between docked and undocked would be too great to scale down to undocked

They may, but with Switch they really hit on something special. To me, Switch takes the best elements of Nintendo handhelds and combines them with what they were hoping for, but missed, with WiiU. Combined with much smarter branding and marketing, and they have a winning formula on their hands. Hopefully, their next gaming device will be a natural evolution of what Switch already is, much in the ways the SNES succeeded the NES. Guess we'll just have to wait and see.
