The world, quests, locations, characters, and story were pretty cool. I'm really impressed that they let you talk to so many characters about so many topics. And the strange graphics engine they used gives a nice and unusual feel.

For me the game was crippled by two big problems: The soldiers are stupid and easy to beat, and you get way too much awesome stuff to use against them. Wikipedia says this game had some kind of extraordinarily advanced AI system or something but whatever, anybody who's decent at circle-strafing can easily become master of Adelpha, unless their ammo runs out which it won't except near the beginning of the game. The triviality of combat makes the whole game feel flabby. It takes the tension out of the story and forces you to take on that tension yourself: Instead of identifying with the hero in his daring task of sneaking and politicking around the small army that's against him, you've got to struggle to keep up your own suspension of disbelief as you take on one big quest chain after another with the goal of weakening soldiers who you can already cut through like butter. The power of the soldiers is central to much of the story, and their weakness against your vast arsenal deeply undermines the majority of this game.

Still, it's perfectly possible to play along and just do the quests. Taken that way, the game is still fairly fun. And it's unusual enough to be worth exploring despite its flaws.
